Hi all,

I am making a very special cake for a very special lady and I wanted to use the Sarahs red velvet recipe but not sure about adding the food color. I would prefer not to add my americolor so I bought a grocery store brand but it seems kinda thin and liquidy? Am I able to use two whole ounces of this stuff without it being too much liquid for the batter?

Any thoughts at all would be appreciated.

I used the McCormick brand in it but I did not use the entire bottle that the recipe called for. I would try half and see if it comes up with the right color for you. Just has to be a deep red.

I used this recipe for a Wedding Cake and I used Wal-Mart Brand Red food color. The bride and MIL said the cake was delicious.

I just made one of these yesterday and I used 2 bottles of the walmart brand. It did not thin the batter at all it was still fairly thick.

The food color used in the recipe is a liquid food color not a gel or paste.

Also the 2oz of food coloring is part of the liquid that the cake needs. So if you don't add in all 2oz of food coloring then substitute water for the remaining ounces.

My grandma and I each use 1oz of the liquid food coloring then fill the bottle back up with water to get the rest of the coloring and to get the remaining liquid needed.

Who needs 2 oz of red food coloring anyways?

Also if I have not had time to get the liquid food coloring then I have just colored 2 oz of water with my gel food coloring and it worked also.
