Hi guys - as you know, I'm very new here and have only done a couple cakes. But I think I'm already causing inspiration around my house...

My girlfriend decided to give it a try for her mom's birthday! Party is tonight, so a couple nights ago we got to baking...

Now, this was to be "her" cake, so I didn't do most of it.

- I provided some knowhow and ideas, ran the KA, and then I did the leveling, assembly and BC coat.

- She did the rest herself, including coloring, rolling and draping the fondant, making the tiles, etc - and did all that straight linework with a "fondant writer" (tastes just like cookie icing to me...)

Oh, I guess I helped color in some of the squares.

So, here goes, Krystal's First Cake, for her mom the word game fan! it's not quite finished in this pic but almost (she's still working on it).

Image

We didn't have enough cake "real estate" to do a 15x15-square scrabble board, so we reduced it to 11x11 squares.

And yes, the center square, under the "H" tile, is both colored pink AND has a black star in it, just as on the real board.

Also, she's currently making the four gumpaste letter-holders, onto which she is putting tiles spelling out her name and her three siblings' names!

Sorry for the blurry phone-picture, she'll have better pics to come.

Cheers!
Dave

I like the originality of a game board versus your run of the mill cake. It is so nice to be able to incorporate a hobby of the birthday person.

Thanks all, she'll love the feedback!

In this picture, BTW, the fondant had crumbled at the corners - I mistakenly told her the fondant would be OK while we waited for the BC to set, I should have told her to wait and roll it out right before putting it on the cake - so it was too dry.

OH - This morning she sends me a new picture - she had made more matching fondant and re-done all the edges/corners, right up to the white outline of the gameboard so there would be no seam! Unbelievable! She's seriously dedicated to this cake =0)

Good for you for inspiring her to do this! Its a great design and executed very well. Cake decorating is great 'hobby' for a couple to take up. When I started decorating just a few months ago my husband jumped on the bandwagon. He doesn't do any cake work but since he's a graphic artist he's made alot of designs for me to print out edible images, etc...

I hope the two of you have fun with your joint endeavors.

I should also have mentioned that with the exception of a couple particular dishes, she does not cook, let alone bake, at all! I'm the chef of the house =0)

So that makes it doubly special to me.
