I am getting to the point where I am afraid to try anything new. I seem to be just comfortable in making the same style of cake, same decorations, and the same style of cupcakes. I feel that I would be wasting a cake if I tried something new and messed it up. Is it that I am just in a rut. I only do this for fun. Any ideas?

No such thing as wasting a cake. Someone will always eat it. LOL

If you don't want to go through the trouble of baking cakes, maybe you could get some cake dummies. They're inexpensive and you can reuse them forever.

I find myself procrastinating whenever I am about to try something different. (Like right now, for example. I should be in the kitchen decorating....but I'm here on CC because I'm about to try something new to me) Ironic, huh?

Anyway....10 times out of 10...I get it and it looks great and it feels great!! As the Nike ad say...JUST DO IT!!!!

If you are stuck and want to try something new- have some else (someone you really love, like your child, or best friend) pick something for you to try. You won't want to let them down. I find that a lot of people will do something for someone else but not themselves.

jeanair,
I have been decorating (for family) for 20 some years. Yeah, I was in a rut too. Decided to take a class to learn how the 'real people' do it. Then was hooked on this site as well. Now I want to try everything but don't have the time anymore! So, once a week, I will try something new. It doesn't matter WHAT the cake looks like, I try something new even if it doesn't go together as you can see by my chocolate cake pic. It was a caramel middle (which I needed to try); chocolate ganache (which I now learned what worked and what didn't) and candy clay flowers (which is much like playing in play-doh. I thought the malt balls from Melvira's cake was so cute so I put those on too! It doesn't matter what it looks like at times. A cake is like your palette. Just don't lose the fun in doing it!

It is always good to try something new but doing the same cake over and over again can only make you better at it and after a while when you have perfected that particular cake or style of cupcakes then you can start adding or changing things on the type of cake that you like to make. . .And like someone else said. . .No matter how it looks someone will eat it!lol
