Okay, I am totally new to cake decorating, yet my grandmother asked me to make her a small, simple wedding cake. So, I made three layers and, like a dummy, put them one on top of the other. Well, the bottom layer has slid, smooshed, flattened, (or whatever) in the back. It looks HORRIBLE!!! I can't believe I did this. Anyway, I know that there is no saving the cake and I know that I do not have the time or the money to make a whole new cake (the wedding is tomorrow morning). So, does anyone have any creative presentation ideas for hiding the whole back of the cake??? ![]()
People on here have made cake spackling (sp?) on here before. Mix the cake and icing and rebuild the cake. Then freeze for a little bit and redecorate. It has worked for many. Also, pull it apart and support it with dowel rods and/or straws so that you don't have any more problems!
Good luck and keep decorating!!!
I know you stated you don't want to make a whole new cake but what about making a new bottom tier? Just disassemble current cake and put together new cake, but with adequate supports so it doesn't happen again.
I know it's stressful when you are new to decorating and you are on a deadline. Believe me, I think most of us have been there. One thing I learned though is that there is almost ALWAYS a good solution. At least in the future just be sure to leave yourself plenty of time to redo it, if necessary. I learned that it is okay to rip off the poorly done fondant or scrape off badly written messages, etc. and start again until you get it right. If you don't like it, do it again and again until you do.
As wise DUFF says, "DON'T LET THE CAKE PUSH YOU AROUND." If the results aren't what you want then MAKE them what you want. That is the only way you will be happy with the product you put out. If all else fails, get creative with ways you can cover up any flaws.
Happy DESIGNING and decorating.
Also, I agree with Gabbenmom. You more then likely will have to pull it apart and put more supports or else something else could happen to it in transit or even at the site.
I think so also....you'll be happy you did and it will save more headaches with transportation as well....
Just take a deep breath...get psyched and just work carefully and determinedly...it'll be lovely and you will be so happy you did this...
Everyone will be routing for you!!!! It'll be fine...
I agree, you would do well to take it apart and start over again. If it is due tomorrow morning you have more than enough time to redo/remake the bottom teir.
Like someone said before to qoute Duff "you can't let the cake tell you what's up." Make that cake do what you want it to. If you do not take it apart and put supports into it, you are going to have more problems than just the bottom sliding by tomorrow I can assure you. Do your self and your Grammy a huge favor, take it apart and do it again ![]()
Let us know if you need any help
I'm with everyone else - disassemble, then reassemble with the supports. You can find instructions on this site for using dowels (just use straws if it's a smaller cake). If you absolutely can't make a new bottom tier, perhaps you can just use the top two tiers in your presentation (maybe put it on a cake pedestal to elevate it), then keep the bottom tier in the kitchen to be cut and served, sight unseen.
You can do this, I know it!! Good luck!!

I agree that you should try to make another botom tier. This happened a few years ago to a girl getting married at my church. Her mom asked me to make the grooms cake, another lady in the church who had more expierence to make the wedding cake. I went to the church Staurday morning. The other lady had finished her cake the night beofre. I walk into the reception area & the cake was leaning over about to fall. I called the lady, she came up there. It was literally 3 hours beofre the wedding. We ended up grabbing a big pot from the kitchen, & putting the top 2 layers on it. Covering it with tule, lace & flowers. We took the bottom layer into the kitchen where it was cut & served. NO one knew until after the wedding.Good luck, use good support for this one.
