I've always gotten mine at Wal-Mart in the yard goods/sewing department. It's sold off of long rolls hanging above each other on a floor display and it comes in various thicknesses. I imagine that you could also get it at a fabric store like Joann's, etc.

i went to walmart straight to the fabric department and asked someone that works in that department and they said they didnt have any and i heard 1 woman telling a customer that they dont have it at that store and was sending the woman to another store thats not really close by. there is a joanns fabric around my area i'll check that out. i dont believe i've ever seen a hobby lobby but we have ac moore, dont know if they would have it. is it vinyl? i just want to make sure i ask for the right thing. thanks.

Yeah, it's vinyl. Some people use it for over their fabric table cloths. I bought some at Walmart for covering over the fabric on the kitchen chair my 2 year old uses.

Its vinyl or plastic but tell them you need it to cover a table but you want the clear thick kind. I got mine at Hobby Lobby. You should be able to get it anyplace that sells fabric goods. I use mine and just grease it up. You can put one on the bottom and one on the top. I have seen Marsha Winbeckler use this in demo's.

You should be able to get it any fabric or craft store in your area. Good Luck

I get mine at JoAnn's ... there are several thicknesses, and it comes in clear and maybe blue and pink.

I bought some clearance stuff at joann recently, there was a ton of it for like $2. But then I decided to go ahead and buy the fondant work mat by ateco instead. I have the wilton one and I get so tired of the edges coming undone from the counter and rolling up. So I assumed the vinyl would do the same thing. I am hoping the work mat is a good investment! It hasnt arrived yet though! I found it at some discount on line store for like $28 plus like $6 shipping. It is like $40 plus like $15 shipping from ateco directly. I hope it is worth it! I will let everyone know.

..I bought my vinyl at Joanns but what I do is put my Wilton mat down first and then the vinyl on top of that, so that I can still see the Wilton measurements! Works great!

What do you use the vinyl for? Do you roll the fondant out between 2 sheets of it? How much of it do you buy?

I bought about a yard of it and cut a piece a little bit bigger than my island in the kitchen. Lightly coat it with crisco and then roll out my fondant. Some people roll fondant out between two pieces of vinyl but I haven't tried that!

A vinyl mat or a "fondant" mat from Wilton will work fine. Make sure it is impeccably clean. No lint, etc. The fondant will pick up everything. Some often use a "dusting puff" to clean the surface. That's a mesh cloth filled with cornstarch. Do not use confectioner's sugar. That can make the fondant sticky.

It also will help to coat the surface with a thin layer of white vegetable shortening before you start rolling the fondant out.

Do not roll the fondant out between the vinyl. Roll it out like a pie crust and move it around alot to assure it is not "stuck" so that when you pick it up.....it won't tear.

Do not overwork the fondant or it will become soft and develope tears when you lift it.

Do not "flip" the fondant and mat over onto your cake. If the fondant is stuck, it will tear when you remove the mat from the fondant.

There are many ways to "lift" the fondant in place but I like to slip a large cake board under the fondant and pick it up like a pizza crust on a wooden paddle. Then I slide it off onto the cake after I center the fondant properly.

Good luck.

I love all these tips. I just got done messing up some fondant. I was trying to put it on a cake that was bigger than usual. I had to make another batch after i took the bad one off.
Do you ever use the textured vinyl for design ?

Awww ... I feel your pain. I hate when I've spent all that time rolling out the fondant and then I mess it up when I try to put it on the cake!!! icon_cry.gif

I've never tried the textured vinyl, but I think it's a great idea!!! thumbs_up.gif

I guess you could call it a sweet mistake. (we all had to try to dispose of it). icon_rolleyes.gif Kind of like the cake balls. (does anyone have a candy for ruined mmf?) icon_smile.gif

Heehee ... I like that ... a sweet mistake. icon_smile.gif

For ruined MMF, how about just tearing off pieces of it, rolling them up in little balls, and popping them in your mouth? icon_lol.gificon_lol.gificon_lol.gif

Tell me if anyone else has done this....I have laid the fondant on and "ruined" it because of a rip/poor placement etc. I have taken it off as carefully as possible with crumbs and icing attaching itself -- then balled it up--nuked it 15 seconds and reworked it and the crumbs disappear and the icing is just more sugar and crisco it easily works in---and honestly I don't notice a difference in the texture and it works just as good as the first time.

Anyone else had luck trying this? I recommend it so you don't lose the fondant. I'm curious? Try it!
