I'm moving from Indiana to PA the first week of November. I will be near the Lancaster area. Anyone from around here? If you have an actual business, do you have a store, or do you do it out of your home? What would you say the average cost of cakes go for this area?

Hi I live about two hours away from lancaster. I decorate cakes mainly for a hobby. However scratch made cakes cost about the same as bakery cakes. I suggest that you call the local bakeries in that area and inquire about their prices. Hope I was helpful. icon_smile.gif

Hi!!! I'm in Philly...haven't started charging yet but am still learning new techniques. I do everything out of home and of course am not "legal" yet, but that is my goal for the new year thumbs_up.gif

I would check out local bakeries/businesses and price according to your talents/capabilties...

Hi!

I'm in Langhorne, just outside of NE Philly... I bake out of my home. I'm not legal yet since I don't have a huge number of customers but I try to follow the basic guidelines, have an extra fridge, nice dishwasher, no pets indoors, etc.

I think since PA is both rural and urban there would be a large price difference. I charge on the higher end around here along with there being a very high cost of living where I am. However in the more rural areas like Lancaster it might be harder to get those prices...plus you'll be competing with all the Amish bakers as well! Probably there aren't a ton of fancy decorators though, just the breads and cakes.

I'd like to become legal eventually but want to wait until I have a more steady stream of clients. Right now I mostly use word of mouth through my website.

Welcome kdhoffert! Lancaster is beautiful. Lots of farms and quaint towns and a great outlet mall! I am about an hour from there, halfway between Lancaster and Philly. I decorate as a hobby only. I am not sure about cakes in the Lancaster area, but there are a lot of Amish pies!

Yeah, I will actually be in Brownstown, outside of Lancaster, but still in Lancaster county. Very small town off of 222. My in-laws live in Denver, so there are a ton of little places like Weaver's markets and Yoder's and that kind of stuff. I know that in Ephrata you can do it out of your home as long as you deliver your cakes. They can't come pick them up at your house because then it would be considered a shop or something like that. But the good thing is that you can advertise. I'm hoping that it's the same in Brownstown. Their township office is in West Earl, and the zoning guy is who I have to talk to and he only works from 9am-noon on Thursday mornings, so I'm having a hard time getting ahold of him. Are most of the decorating classes around that area at like the Michael's and AC Moore stores? I used to do cakes at a supermarket, and then I've did some for family and friends here. I'm always looking to brush up my skills. I'm hoping to maybe find someone close by that might be interested in taking classes with me. Figuring I won't be so lucky though. icon_smile.gif

Hi, Welcome to PA! I'm on the Lancaster-side of Reading, about 40 minutes away. I'm doing cakes out of my home, but I'm hoping to expand to a storefront someday! My DH is from Lancaster. You can PM me if you have any specific questions about the area.
