So I have a wedding cake coming up and the theme of the wedding is fall. Sunflowers for the most part with some fall leaves. I have having a heck of a time with the sunflowers. Should I make the out of fondant alone, gumpaste alone, or a mixture of both? ** I am not really experienced with making flowers ![]()
But I will try.. Has anyone ever made sunflowers? All suggestions will be greatly apperciated! Thanks!
I recently made a wedding cake with sunflowers, and it was the first time I made them.
I used a cutter from PME (though I believe Ateco has one just like it) and a silicon mould for the flower centre (Diamond moulds). It worked great! I have attached images of them so you know which ones I mean.
I used a 50/50 mix of gum paste and fondant.
Briefely this is what I did; I cut out two flowers of thinly rolled paste. Then I placed them on a pad and gently softened the edges with a ball tool. Then I placed one on top of the other, and made sure the petals on the top flower were placed in between the petals on the bottom flower.
Then I attached a flower centre - that I had moulded out of the silicon mould and dusted with dark brown - and then I placed the whole flower on a flower former to dry (so that the flower would be slighlty cupped).
I also painted the petals with some extra dust colour (mixed with a little alcohol) to deepen the yellow a bit.
I hope you understand. I'm bad at making instructions - or at least I hate making them and in addition I'm not a native English speaker, so please do ask if it's not making sense.
