Thankfully I was right there when it happened.

Turned on the light over the oven and smelled that burning wire smell, glanced up and smoke was coming out like no tomorrow.

I turned it off, got the bulb out and took off the cover so I could watch it for a bit.

I called the electrician in a panic (They were supposed to be out yesterday or today) and he calmed me down and assured me that I was going to live to see another day and that his guys were going to be out tomorrow.

He suggested though that we purchase a new hood though as this one was at least 27 years old and just like everything else... neglected.

So I have to convince hubby tonight (It's not going to take much I called him sobbing and he knew it was my last straw and the end of the rope that I was grasping on to) after my class (refreshing with Wilton and starting course 3 tonight) that we all need to go back out when I get home to buy a stove hood.

I'm not going to ask what is next and none of you better either! icon_lol.gif

I can't wait for a day with out electricity tomorrow to get my new electric panel and get all these potential fire hazards out of here.

You'll know it's me... I'll be posting pics because only you gals would understand my glee over upgrades of this kind.

maybe while I'm at HD I can bat my eyes and squeeze out a tear and get my fridge too.

Taht would mean come Monday I could contact the Health Dept! Oh the light at the end of the tunnel! thumbs_up.gif

oh be honest, you just wanted to get some new appliances icon_wink.gif just kidding. Seriously though it's a good thing you noticed it right away, the outcome could have been horrible.

Thank goodness you caught it in time. Those electrical fires are nasty. Your'e not supposed to throw water on them but I'd probably panic and do it anyway.

One of the burners on my stove caught fire just last week. Some milk had overflowed and some was still on the burner. Not saying a fire was a good thing, but it was the perfect time to show my 14 year old how to not panic, and how to CALMLY throw baking soda on it.

My parents had 2 house fires by the time I was 14 years old (neither were their fault .... landlord's doing things "on the cheap"), so fire safety is my mega-button!

Well we got the new hood, skipped the fridge. We got there @ 9:30 and they closed at 10:00.

I was tired and just wanted to get in and get out with out anything in depth tonight.

Oh and light bulbs... Sears is so in the dog house with us right now (Should have had all this done in May so I could license late May/early June and here we are mid August) and they have cost me thousands of dollars of turned away business (yes I kept track of it all).

Right now they are around $5K in the hole with me and reaching $6K soon in my lost revenue.

They told the electrician "do what she wants to make her happy". We have new light fixtures going in the kitchen/dining area, a new one in our bedroom, a motion light in the back by the sliding glass door, a new porch light, and 2 10 foot flourescents in the garage. They are doing the new hood over the stove/oven (surpise to them on that!), and an outlet in the garage for my new fridge. We bought the fixtures, Sears is paying for all the wiring/labor needed for the rest.

The new electrical panel goes on tomorrow too, which we are paying for.

The worst part is Sears has not once called us to talk about this or to make us happy. Heaven forbid the day they do. I'll not yell, I'll not cuss, but I will cut them with words. If they ask for further amends once I make it clear what they have cost me I'm going to tell them that I really feel like I am taking advantage of them at this point but if they insist on doing something more they are more than welcome to deliver two 5 quart kitchen aids to me and we'll call it happy. ( thumbs_up.gif )

Regardless of the huge gift of paying for our extra electrical needs it will still take time for me to walk back in their store but it's going to take even longer for me to get over the fact they have screwed my installation up with this heat pump/AC system so badly and have cost me so much.

I'm more disappointed I guess than mad. I have always gotten great service from Sears and to have it go this wrong on such a grand scale is just a bit hurtful more than angering.

So there's my saga. LOL

OMG! I can't believe it, indydebi ... the same thing happened to me about two weeks ago. I thought I was the only one who this had/would ever happen to! I was making mac 'n cheese for the kids, and you know how when you drop those noodles into the boiling water, you get a major water eruption ... well, my water was too high and it flowed over the pot into my burners. It started sparking, smoking and giving off scarry noises. icon_redface.gif I then noticed it flipped a circuit breaker off and when I went to put it back on ... the firework show began again and the breaker flipped off again. icon_redface.gificon_redface.gif This time I kept it off and called the repair man ... $190 later icon_cry.gif I had a new set of burners because so much plastic had melted on my old ones. All that for a .70 box of mac 'n cheese icon_mad.gif ! I have one of those built-in GE gas stove tops ... I will forever panic whenever any of my pots boil over!
