I am making a football helmet cake. There is going to be 2 8 inch rounds on the bottom and the Bety Crocker Dome on top. Does the dome cake have to have a cardboard bottom or can the dome cake be put right on top of the 2 8 inchers? Also, do you dowel the whole cake?? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

If my brain is working correctly.......LOL....From what you wrote, I would do the 2 8inch and put the dome on a cardboard of it's own and dowel under it...HTH

That is what I was thinking. But I am freezing all the cakes. And I think I have to dowel it before I freeze them. I will have to freeze them with the dowel through the dome and into the first layer 8 inch. I don't want to freeze the cake with the filling in it. I have never made a helmet cake before. It will be interesting. Thanks.

I did a helmet cake recently (check my photos - it's the one with the Dallas Cowboys and Micky Mouse hat on top). I used 2 6 inch rounds on the bottom and half a sport ball on top (mine was smaller than what yours will be). I did put the top portion (the half sports ball) on carboard, but only because I knew when I carved out the face portion, the top would be sticking out farther than the rest of the cake, and I wanted to make sure it was supported. Does that make sense? Maybe when you look it at, you'll know what I mean. Let me know if you have any more questions - the helmet was fun and not too difficult! The tricky part was the mask part of it.
I'll be away from the computer on and off today so if you ask anything else - it may be a while before I see it so don't think I'm ignoring you!

I have done cowboys and Steelers helmet cakes. I put the helmet on a piece of cardboard and doweled under it. After it was on the cake I ran a dowel through the whole thing to keep the helmet from rolling away during transport.

Thanks for replying everyone. I think I am going to cardboard it all and dowel it all too. Thanks.
