A couple of weeks ago a customer picked up a cake and asked me "Do you use a box mix?" icon_surprised.gif She was one of a very few who have ever asked me that question. I answered her honestly, and said yes I start with a box mix. She then asked what kind/flavor did I use. I told her (I thought maybe some allergy issues had arisen that I was not aware of). She said "I have a friend who can get cake mixes for 75 cents a box. Would you like me to get some for you? icon_surprised.gificon_lol.gificon_smile.gifthumbs_up.gif Of course I said YES!!.. She just called. she has 36 boxes for me and I dont have to pay her now.. just deduct the amount from the price of the cake she is getting in November. WOOO HOOOO! icon_biggrin.gif

That's great! I always cringe when I get asked that question, although everyone who's asked is usually complimenting me on how it tastes. I need to come up with a patent answer I can use everytime.

LOL! Yep went through a line with 27 boxes of cake mix (needed alot of yellow for 50 individual favor cakes) at 82 cents and the checkout lady was like. "That's alot of cake!" They had a huge stock of it and its rare that anybody even carries that many at a time so figured I'd stock up!

Wonderful!! I hope they are not expiring soon?? icon_eek.gif I never flinch when someone asks me that. For me, mixes are the only way to go and I have no problem with someone prefering scratch and finding that elsewhere. It just isn't worth the headache to me icon_smile.gif

That's wonderful. At first I thought your post was going to lead to the customer getting angry b/c you use box mixes. Good thing it didn't turn out that way. Some people, don't know why, get upset that we use mixes.

Great deal! I too got a great deal. My aunt's husband is retired from the military so she has access to the stores on the base. She can get me cake mix for .69 per box no tax. I'm so happy, I've already bought my first case of white cake mix. I'm getting more for the upcoming holidays.

I get asked that question a lot. I have been answering it with, "Yes I use a box mix but I have my own way of mixing it together."

I do feel guilty though, when customers rave about the cake, then I have to tell them it isn't made from scratch, but box instead.

However, I have never gotten a negative reaction when they find out!!

That's awesome that you've got a customer that you can count on to be a good person and who is willing to help you out!!

There are two Super-Walmarts where I live, and one of them ALWAYS sells their DH cake mixes for 73 cents!!! The other one varies from 82 cents on sale, to almost a dollar, they are only a few miles apart, so I wonder why it's like that!!

Funny story... I went through line buying stuff for the two giant upcoming weddings on the 14th and 21st... I bought approx 50 cake mixes, 50 puddings, and 30 bags of PS... the cashier guy looks at me and says, "Whatcha makin'?" I smiled and said, "Lasagna." He turned purple and chuckled. In my head all I could hear was, "here's your sign..."

How about using the term "pre-measured ingredients" instead of cake mix!

I got some .82 cake mixes too, and was happy with that. I am also happy to see some fellow cake mix lovers, lol. I use cake mix simply as an additive to my recipe. More or less like I would use flour. I add eggs, flour, sugar, butter, eggs, flavoring, pudding, liquors, etc. If that isn't a recipe for a cake, then what is it? People also rave about my cakes. All of my customers have been repeats, and also refer me to other people. Nobody has ever asked me if I use a box, because you could never tell from the taste, but if they did, I'd probably say "I use my own recipe, and cake mix is just one of many ingredients. It really takes the back burner to everything else I add."
