How To Make Cake Look Like An Oil Painting?
Decorating By maggiegirl714 Updated 10 Aug 2007 , 4:47am by chaptlps
I am thinking of making a cake and I want to have it look rough and the icing to look like I used thick oil paint. I am afraid if I use the colors I am considering, that they will bleed and change. Does anyone have any ideas, examples of cakes that look like paintings, hints or suggestions?
I have never seen a cake like that but great idea.. but im confused if you are afraid the colors would bleed isnt that kindof what a oil painting does the colors all kindof run into each other.. I would pipe with buttercream then blend together with a damp paintbrush until the colors "blend" together... HTH
hmmm,
here's what I would do hun, first I would make up some rather thin consistency buttercream icing and color it the palette that you are looking for, then get some good quality artists bristle brushes. If they have the taklon stiff brushes those are the best for cakes less shedding. And paint with the colored frosting on a crumbcoated top (don't want the frosting to be too thick on the top) and I would use the large icer tip for the sides and use either a palette knife or small icing spatula for making the stucco like effect on the sides.
With the stiff brushes you can get that wonderful impasto effect just like an oil painting, blending your colors etc I wouldn't worry about bleeding Just don't put it in the fridge and the icing will crust over with time. You could probably do the same thing on a fondant plaque with royal icing if you wanted a more permanent piece.
K just for the record here, this would make for a more impressionistic style of painting, more like a van gogh n not a rembrandt.
The reason I said to do the painting on a crumb coat only is so that there won't be divots in the icing from brushing that way and the crumb coat would keep crumbs from migrating into the painting itself.
Hope that helps ya hun.
O by the way, if you wanted to see an example of painting (dry brush style) on buttercream I have a picture in my gallery called "snow queen with violin"
Here's a thread I had saved.

Talmas has painted some pretty cakes.
Here's what I would do:
Cover cake in fondant. Before covering, lay a sheet of plastic wrap over the fondant. Then lay a slightly damp, textured dishtowel over the plastic wrap. Roll over the towel with a rolling pin, imprinting the texture onto your fondant. This will give you the look of canvas. You could also use a paper towel to make the imprint.
Then, add 1 tsp. clear piping to one cup of royal icing. Color the icing as desired. Use sable brushes to paint your design onto the cake. The piping gel with keep your RI from setting up too quickly (giving you time to work with it). It won't run like buttercream might, but it will also be softer than straight RI, so you'll be able to cut the cake with no problem.
Can't wait to see your finished cake, however you end up doing it!

this is my favorite cake that has been painted. Talmas did it and her directions are in the link posted above. I highly recommend sending a PM to her or having her post here in this topic with anymore information she might have.

Thank you all for your information - I loved the colors of lady cake and the last one with the bridge has a lot of the strokes I was thinking about doing. I like how she uses a brush. I'm going to play around with some old icing I have in the fridge and see what I can come up with. This is very exciting - esp seeing others have done it. (yes I was looking more at impressionist and modern art).
