Hey everyone,

I made my first really detailed character cake last night (Superman) and I used Wilton cake release like I always do with my pans. It worked great but not all of the details from the pan made an impression on the cake. I'm wondering if perhaps I put a little too much release that welled up in the crevices and prevented the pan from molding to its full extent.

Has anybody else run into this or have any tips? I was able to freehand it pretty well but I'm just curious if there's a better way to do it.

Thanks!

I always have this happen, if I don't use quite a bit of cake release I have a mess getting it out of the pan. I just assumed that you would never get perfect detail and you would have to go over and perfect it with your decorating anyways. I would like to hear what other people have to say also though.

When I do character pans, I let them cool, put a light crumb coat of icing on it (let it crust slightly so it won't stick). Then take the clean pan, put it back on the cake and press down. The details will press into the crumb coat and you can follow them quite easily.

Glad the idea helped. I did it one day out of desperation, and found out it worked.
