Just wanting to get some ideas...
What do you use Dream Whip for??

I had a flashback of Dream Whip from when I was a kid. I remembered a blue-like box. My husband (older than me) thought I was crazy for thinking of whipped topping in a box. He didn't know anything about it. I was afraid it was a thing of the past, but I FOUND SOME! I guess they (Mom and aunts) must've used it as whipped topping for pumpkin pie or something.

What all can it be used for? How do you use it?
Any way to incorporate this into icings would be most helpful!
Thanks!

When I took a cake dec class many years ago my instructor who was in her 70's said to use several tablespoons of Dream whip in your bc icing when it is humid out. I will look for the recipe and try to post it for you. I have used it to make some jello fluff recipes...

sundine, your prof had the right idea. thing is, you can add cornstarch to your BC or cream cheese icing for the same result. the flavor, be it orange, maple, caramel, vanilla, or anything else, is the predominant flavor of the icing.

after all, confectioners' sugar is comprised of powdered sugar and up to 3% cornstarch. me, personally, i like the way cornstarch enhances fruit flavor, and i sure as heck can't taste it in my regular vanilla flavored buttercream!

forgot to say that cornstarch is no substitute for keeping your iced cake in the freezer for half and hour or so. thing is, when it's hot and humid, or even cool and humid, you need some sort of agent to stiffen the icing. i go with cornstarch.

by the way, did i remember to mention cornstarch? icon_biggrin.gif

That's funny, two threads on the same subject at the same time. I only use the Dream Whip (only I buy Krogers brand) in my cake batter rather than in the icing. I'm not sure why it works, but it makes my cakes bake higher and less crumbly.

Ok, now I'm interested. Veejaytx, you add Dream Whip to your cake batter. Any particular flavor (cake) or any and all? Do you add the entire pkg (bag) or part? And to what quantity of batter is this bag added? I would love to do this tomorrow AM. Need a cake for dinner and it would be fun to try something different. Thank you in advance.

Found the recipe for adding the dream whip to the bc icing for high humidity . It is 1/4 cup of dream whip to your 2# bag of powd sugar and whatever ratio of shortening/butter you use.

There is a recipe on the box to mix the dream whip with pudding mixes. It's actually pretty good. It makes a nice stiff "cream" filling.

There is a recipe on CC that uses a package of Dream Whip to make buttercream. It is very yummy. If you search under the recipe section for "dream whip" you will find the recipe.

Awesome cake receipe using Dream Whip

Cake mix of your choice
1 package of Dream Whip
1 cup of water
5 large eggs

Do not follow directions on cake mix box, use the ingredients listed above. Mix all ingredients together and beat 5 minutes. Pour in prepared pan and bake 40-45 minutes or until done.

Your cake will be very fluffy after it's finished baking because of the Dream Whip icon_biggrin.gif
