Well I have a dilema. My son will be graduating in 2008. I am already thinking about his cake and am very excited to make it for him. When I asked him if he had any request for a theme he told me he did not want cake, he wants pie! icon_cry.gif My heart sank I dont do pie unless they come out of a box or from pudding mix. I really want to honor his wishes for pie but I also want to make a cake. I have an idea about what to do. I was thinking I would make a cake and then use a cupcake tower and place little mini pies in it for him. So I geuss my question is does anyone think this is a good idea? Also is there any suggestions on how to decorate a cake with pies on top of it? Any help and suggetions will be greatly appreciated. Thank You!

Why not make the cake look like a pie? You could do a taple top with a pie on it or make a large single layer cake that is carved to look like a pie. Then you could do latice out of fondant over the top. I think it would be pretty fun.

Maybe do what the pp suggested and also use your idea of the mini-pie tower. As you state, it is his graduation, he likes pie - so give it to him (bakery bought pies are pretty darn good). If you do both your cake 'pie' and pie-tower would like nice together as a display. Good for you for planning so far in advance - time flies so 2008 graduations will be here before we know it!

What about baking a cake in a pie crust? Then pouring the filling on top as the "icing."

I think ... as it's his graduation, the pie is probably the way to go. If you need a kick butt recipe for apple pie ... I have one that pleases everyone, and my mom's pie pastry recipe is awesome. You can always make a cake as well. Especially if there will be a group of people. Pies and pastry are easy.

I think the occasion could definitely stand more than one dessert. Pie ... cake ... sounds delicious!

IMHO, it's his day... give him what he wants. What type of pie does he like? How skilled at pies are you? I'm sure if you tell us what he likes we can help you come up with something.

My son does me the same way. Usually for his birthday, he doesn't want cake, he wants a giant cookie. No icing. He doesn't care for cake, or icing.

So, what I do is make a cake, with whatever theme he chooses, for whomever will be at the birthday party, and I make him his own special cookie. He only has to share if he wants to (which he usually does).

Maybe you could do the same. Make whatever graduation cake you were wanting to make for him for the party, and for everyone else to eat. Then make, or buy, his favorite pie for just him on his special day.

Pssst.. Hey, Roelle, can I get that recipe? Apple is my husband and father's favorite, and I love baking, but I can't make a good pie (or crust) to save my life. Thanks so much!

Hope this helps, 1234 cakemom,

Holly
