I just got an order to do a Steelers Helmet. The cake is not the problem, I have never done fondant or anything like that and from the pics in the gallery, the face masks are fondant. How hard would it be to do for a beginner? Please someone give me some helpful hints. I am CLUELESS!!!!! Than you very much
I would bend some hanger wire and use that to frame the face mask. That would be an awful lot of fondant for a floral wire to hold up in a horizontal position.
Wrap the hanger wire with long strips of fondant that is mixed 50-50 with gumpaste, so it dries hard.

I am also making a helmet cake for Friday night. Last night I took my fondant and colored it and then just looked at the gallery pics and found the mask part. I took my fondant and rolled it in between my hands to look like a snake. I am making 2 8 inch rounds for the bottom. So I know that my mask piece has to be 8 inches in width and then I added about 1/2 to 1 inch on either side so the mask will come around the side of the helmet. So I copied a mask that I saw in the gallery and just molded it around a Ziploc tupperware rectangle plastic bowl. It is drying in that shape. I hope this doesn't sound confusing. Some people mold the fondant like a snake and put the fondant over a gallon sized milk container and let it dry. If anyone has any other suggestions, please tell. I can use all the help I can get. How much would you charge for a helmet cake?
Bransmom??? What flavor cakes are you baking for your helmet?
I have done one cowboy and two steelers helmets. The first one I wanted to be completely edible, and made the face mask from MMF and gumpaste. It broke in a million pieces and I had to creatively find ways of hiding the breaks. After that I used floral wire covered in MMF. MUCH easier! You can do it last minute and bend to shape. Just remember to tell the client ![]()
If mine breaks into a million pieces I will know what to do now. Thanks Newtocakedecorating. That is good to know. I wish I had thought of that before I went and made mine.
sunflowerfreak: it will be yellow cake
Do I need to just buy fondant? When I say clueless, that is exactly what I mean. I have never even touched this stuff. How much would it take? so I need to form it and let it dry for how long? Sorry to be a pain, but I would really like to make this cake. Thanks a bunch
NEWTODECORATING: your cakes are beautiful. I am in the process of a wedding cake that is due tomorrow and I hope it turns out as beautiful as yours. Your hlemet is so cute. How did you do the cake in front of the maske? Your roses are gorgeous. How do you get them so beautiful? I can't make one, so I had to order them and then the bride changed her colors so I had to color them with luster dust. It was a pain in the butt.
I am drying my face mask for a week. That is what I read on CC-to let it dry for a week. You can make the MMF recipe that is on here. It works great. Or you can use gumpaste.
bransmom you are so sweet!! I will PM you
