Hello again all! Okay, I have worked with MMF twice before with good results but have heard a lot about Satin Ice through all of you. Wanted to get opinions on the taste. MMF tastes good but in small doses (so I'm told), we all know Wilton Fondant is not tasty so I wanted opinons on Satin before I try it.

ALSO, I have never iced on top of my fondant. Normally, it has been simple designs. So, which is preferred, buttercream or royal icing to do swirls or other types of writing?

I am such a newbie so any info would be appreciated.
Being self taught in every arena, this website is a God sent.
Thanks to all,
Mar

Mar..no worries you did not ask anything goofy at all. I am sorry you didn't get a quicker response. I think Satin Ice is very tasty and have been told that the choclate satin ice tastes just like a tootsie roll.

As far as putting icings decor over the top of it, I really think it is just a matter of personal prefrence, and what you are trying to accomplish. I have used both BC and RI with great success.
I hope this helps icon_smile.gif

Hi Mar! I use Satin Ice often and love the taste. The chocolate does taste like a Tootsie Roll! I also use Pettinice as it is very good also. I've used both RI and BCF on top of fondant. Just depends on my mood and what I am trying to create.

i jsut got satin ice yesterday for the same reasons and i must say it tastes like chemicals to me. It is 7times the price of making MMF (which is never consistent for me) but i was willing to try. I havent worked with it yet but the taste just isnt my thing. Im starting to think i just hate fondant but LOVE working with it.

Hi there! Not stupid questions!

I make mmf, mainly b/c I have no place locally to purchase fondant (other than Wilton) and I'm too cheap to pay shipping! icon_wink.gif Plus, I don't make a ton of cakes, so making fondant isn't that time consuming for me (a batch here, a batch there, etc.).

I'm getting ready to try Toba Garett's recipe for fondant, which I'll switch to if I like it. My main complaint with MMF is that it's not always consistent. However, I've only received compliments on the taste of it & I've never seen someone peel it off the cake.

As for decorating on top of the fondant, I think it's a matter of preference as well as what types of decorations you're doing. Some people here prefer bc, while others prefer ri. I'm in the RI group. I just like the way it pipes, plus it holds up better in heat & I don't have to worry about the grease from the icing marking up the fondant (I use all-butter BC). You may want to experiment with both & see what you like.

Hope that helped!

Bec

i am a satin ice convert. i used to use the wilton stuff all the time and i honestly thought it tasted fine but after trying satin ice, i saw what people were talking about. it is much more mellow a flavor, it's softer, IMO. i now use the satin ice as the cake covering and the wilton stuff for figures because it seems to hold shape better (and i use my handy dandy coupon at AC Moore for 40%off on the 5lb box icon_lol.gif ) as for putting icing on top for decorations, really you could use either. go for what ever you have on hand or feel like using.

I adore Satin Ice!!!!! I have not made MMF so I have no clue how it tastes. Sorry.

When decorating on Fondant it really depends on the look you are going for. I think RI looks much better on fondant. If you were to use BC, make sure it is a stiff consistancy. HTH!! icon_smile.gif

coumpy,
I know what it's like to work with a toddler in the kitchen. My daughter is now 17 months old and thinks she is the official taste tester. She has been grabbing cookies and anything else she can reach.
