I do this, too. It really helps. Also, I usually draw some scroll patterns on a piece of paper, and have the paper near the cake when I'm doing the scrollwork. Then, I glance at it from time to time to refocus.
Until you can get practice in, you could always use one of those scroll presses, that puts the design imprint on the cake, then you just outline in icing.
If you can't find one, or you want a specific scroll, you can make your own press using royal icing. Draw it out in royal icing on firm paper.. construction, or poster board or something.. Something it will stick to. Build it up two or three times. Let it dry completely, then you can use it as a press to make the imprints in the icing/fondant. Then you just pipe your icing over it.
After a while, you won't even need those any more, and you will just draw them on yourself without even thinking about it.

One thing for me is that I keep my icing bag small. If you put alot of icing in a bag it is hard to manipulate and get precision scrolls. Keep your pressure consistent and the bag twisted enough to keep the air from popping and makein holes when you pipe.
