Ok; I am making a Halloween sheet cake and want to make a spooky tree (branches only; no leaves) that will be on one corner of the tree. I was thinking to make it out of fondant, but am not sure. I don't have very much experience with fondant (only what was learned in the Wilton classes) and am not sure if it will work. I am assuming the tree will dry/set by 10/28 if I make it this weekend. But what about putting it on the cake. Will it stay "up" on the cake just by itself? Should I make the trunk actually long enough that it go all the way down to the cake base or will the cake/icing hold it up w/o having to worry about any under support?

I am not thinking on making a huge tree - I am planning on the tree being about 5 inches tall with a few just bare "scary" branches. (It will be beside a spooky graveyard if that helps with the mental picture.)

I did one out of pretzel rods, pretzel sticks, royal icing (the glue) and a spray can of Wilton black food spray color. I don't have pictures of it but it looked really spooky! I just stuck the trunk of the tree (the pretzel rod) straight in the cake and piped "rocks" around the base to hold it in place and to cover the hole (cake was frosted in BC). I know this isn't exactly what you were asking for but it might be a start in the creative "out-side-the-cake-pan" idea. icon_biggrin.gif
