ok hopefully you guys know what i'm talking about. how do you make those fondant cakes that i've see where the fondant is not really touching the cake its just kinda wrapped and its kinda poofing out. its a little hard for me to explain but i'm sure you guys seen it on here before, i just dont know what to look under to find it and i wanted to do a cake like that. it looks like when you loosely wrap something in fabric.
I'm not sure what you mean, but here's a bump. Maybe someone else can help.
Do you mean fondant swags? If that's what you mean then there is a tutorial on the homepage for it. If that's not what you're talking about, here's a bump!
I think you're talking about fondant swags. Here's a link to the tutorial:http://www.cakecentral.com/article63-How-To-Make-Fondant-Swags.html
If that's not it then here's a bump- either way Good luck!!
i knew this would be the problem. i'm looking thru the fondant gallery right now, 326 pages!!!
its not the drapes that you usually see on tiered cakes. its fondant wrapped on a cake but not smoothed. it looks like it was layed on as usual but the sides are bunched sort of and its not touching the cake as far is i can tell. i'm trying to explain from memory. i'm trying to find the pic of the cake.
Are you talking about fondant just draped over a cake but not a smooth, snug fit and the edges don't adhere to the cake, they just ruffle?
Sorry I can't help...but wanted to give you a bump!
it sounds like either the presemt or the tablecloth look. the present look is to loosly wrap the cake in the fondant like a package wrapped in cloth. The other could be for the fondant to look kind of like a table cloth. i've seen this on other cakes but am not too sure on how to do it. wish i could be more help.
Do you mean something like this? http://www.cakecentral.com/modules.php?name=coppermine&file=displayimage&meta=search&search=ruffle&cat=0&pos=179&search=ruffle
I found the pic in the gallery so if its what you mean I would pm the person who made it.

Theres one like that, pm the person & hopefully they can help you. I would imagine you just cover the cake with the fondant, smooth top then kind pull/stretch the sides and ruffle with your hands until you get the look you want. Good luck

Wow, that is a cool look. I had not seen that before. Hope you are able to track down the instructions soon.
i hope so too projectqueen, but the person i sent a PM to didnt respond yet.
anyone else has any tips or ideas on how to get this look?
Thanks
the same way you wrapped the cloth on your cake pan is how you wrap the fondant around the cake. it's just a little more manouvering and care involved but basically the same. you may even want to place the cake on the fondant wrap loosly then flip upsidedown. this only works with a good stiff cake. or a frozen one. Thats how i'v tried it recently anyway
You can roll your fondant in a long strip about twice as tall as the cake. Instead of laying the fondant on top and working down, you start it on the side ruffle or buch it as you go around, and lay the fondant on the top as you go. Basically you work from the sides up, instead of top down. If you cake is 4 inches tall roll the fondant 8 inches wide, for a 8" round cake roll a strip about 30 inches long, or longer. Better to have to much than to little. Once it is rolled out you can roll the fondant up like a paper tube, start unrolling and bunching, nice to have help here. Start laying the top over after you get 6 inches or so.
