Help! Confused About Cake Dummies

I'm very confused about fondant and buttercream on cake dummies. Do i need to cover the dummy first with buttercream and then my fondant? i've read conflicting instructions.

First, I wrap the dummy in Glad Press'n'Seal so that the dummy itself will stay clean for when I'm ready to re-use it. Then I just smear a light coat of crisco over the whole thing so the fondant will adhere. Never had a problem! icon_smile.gif

You do not have to "crumb coat" a cake dummy. I dampen mine with water and it adheres well. icon_smile.gif

glad you asked because I was thinking the same dang thing. I was thinking why arent they plastic? Why are they styrofoam? How do you reuse it lol icon_lol.gif

How do you get the glad press n seal tight enough so that you don't have creases and bumps and stuff when you cover it with fondant?

Hmm...well, I just press all the wrinkly parts down so they stick to eachother, then between the crisco and the thickness of the fondant it just is smooth. This is a dummy cake done this way:

wow gorgeous picture! I just used some piping gel to get the fondant to stick - it's not perfect, but it's okay.... at least I hope it is!

I make a lot of dummy cakes. All I do is spray a fine mist of water on the dummy and it does fine. However, I do advise using some Crisco on the edges if your doing square cakes. The cake in the attached picture is a dummy.

i used to use shortening, but then found out water is just as good! now i just sprinkle them with water and cover as usual. i don't bother covering the dummy with plastic first, just spray them down with hot water when im done to clean them off. most of my cakes are dummies as i've been building my wedding cake portfolio since i just started my biz. i reused the same dummies over and over and over and they're still going strong!

I think my problem was that I bought one of those green styrofoams - it just keeps getting everywhere! I HAD to cover it b/c of that reason.... so I just covered it and then used some piping gel.
