I have a daughter who wants a princess themed birthday. I don't want to do the castle cake. (done that already) But I wanted to try the pillow cake that I have seen. I wanted to know how and is there a special pan that I need. I'm just starting out with this cake decorating stuff and I really enjoy it. I hope that someone could lend a hand. icon_biggrin.gif

Some take a sqaure pan - put your filling and crumb coat - freeze cake.

Then carve at angle to the pillow shape. Put another crumb coat, then your final layer of frosting or fondant and decoarte.

Hope that makes sense if not someone maybe able to give more details.

I think the fondant pillows look adorable, but they seem like more than I can handle.

PM emmascakes--I know she does marvelous pillows!

I have also wondered how in the world those cakes are done. I saw a picture on here recently that was absolutely gorgeous. It seems to defy gravity. I have always wondered how they are constructed and how you keep the curved bottom of the pillow from cracking under the weight of the top tier pillows.

Here is the link to the neatest picture I saw.

Can't wait to hear how it's done. thumbs_up.gif

Well it read that the rhinestone layers were not edible.. So i'm assuming they are not all cakes.. some are dummys.. Maybe every other pillow is cake and the others dummies.. Good Luck

I have used Lindy Smith's instructions from her Storybook Cakes book for my daughter's princess pillow cake (in my photos) and those worked well for me. adven68 also had good instructions on how to make the pillow in this thread: http://www.cakecentral.com/cake-decorating-ftopict-26219.html

I did one for a little "prince," and you can check it out in my photos. If that's something you'd like, I'd be happy to PM the directions to you. I don't have any square pans - I used a round 8 inch contour pan, so it already had perfect round corners on it, so I just had to cut the sides straight. But since I cut it from an 8 inch, it's a rather small pillow - if you want something larger, you'd have to use a larger pan, if you have one. Hope that helps!
