Okay well I just realized that the state fair cakes are due on Sat or Sun!!! OOPS!!!!

So, I gotta do something in styrofoam that will be simple. I'd love to hear what you all think might be the easiest & cutest - I entered the novice novelty category. Attached are the four of my top choices right now.... the derby one is mine, but it has a choc. transfer on top and buttercream flowers and I'm afraid if the temperature isn't great in the exhibition hall, it might melt - or heck w/ the 100 degree heat - it might melt on the way.... there's also two Debbie Brown cakes & one from aine2.

PLEASE HELP ME W/ IDEAS!

I'm not good at sculpting so the derby cake looks easiest to me. icon_smile.gif
Next choice would be aine2 baby cake.
I also like your witches cake in your gallery photos.

Thank you all who have voted so far! I'm thinking if I go with the fairy teapot I might just do the fairy on top, to the left, and the one that looks like it's coming out of the inside.... just so that there's less to do. I'm hoping I can find some kind of styrofoam ball and cut it in half and make the teapot part out of that.... we'll see how it goes!

I voted for the pirate dreams because pirates are such a hot topic at this time!

I like the derby or ainne's. The middle two don't look like novice work. If you're tense about this and with the heat, I'd be careful! Good luck.

Ok - I cast my vote - but did you have to make it sooo difficult to decide? icon_biggrin.gif These are all fantastic! Can't believe your entering the novice category; these are so professional looking!

Oh just to clarify - the cake pictures aren't mine - well except the Derby cake. The baby blanket one is aine2's from this site, and the two in the middle - the teapot pixies and the pirate kid are Debbie Brown's. I'm going to try to re-create them. I just can't come up with something completely original right now and so I looked through some books I had and through a couple things here.... see I'm limited on what I might be able to get in styrofoam quickly, so I know I can't do a topsy turvy or anything very elaborate - and I entered the novelty category, so I was looking for something fun and cute.... but I needed help making a decision. I think I'm probably going to end up doing the pixie teapot. That is as long as I can find a ball shaped piece of styrofoam that I can cut in half to make the teapot. Otherwise, I'm going to have to figure something else out.......

Thank you everyone who voted & left comments!

Okay question - in Debbie Brown's book for the pixie teapot fairy cake - she says to use 10 cups of batter to make a bowl shaped cake - um, what on earth size styrofoam ball should I get for that?? I got a 6 inch ball and a 7 1/2 inch half ball... the 7 1/2 one looks so big to me - but she says to put it on a 14 in round cake board.... I can only have it be 12 inches for the competition - and I bought a 10 in cake board..., not that I can't go to the store tomorrow and exchange it for a 14 in board - but what size do you think the teapot should be? a 6 in ball? 7 1/2 in? I didn't see anything bigger....

Is it OK to use styrofoam in place of cake in a competition? Shouldn't it be a cake?

LittleLinda,

NO using cake would be a VERY bad idea - considering that it's going to sit in an exhibition hall w/ uncontrollable temperatures from this Saturday until the 27th of August. The cakes will be displayed - it's not a taste contest. If I used real cake, it could get dry and crumble. Or it could get too much moisture from the temperature around it and it could sink or collapse in on itself. There's also the lovely smell it might start to make after sitting for that long..... they should be encased in glass, but I don't want it to look like it's growing mold or anything like that. Not so pretty! They actually encouraged you to use styrofoam in the rules & guidelines of the fair. And it's exactly for those reasons. So not a problem to use the styrofoam - now I just have to figure out what size this teapot should be! Remember - Debbie says use a 14 in cake board, but I can only go 12 inches per the rules of the competition - so then what size "ball' of styrofoam should I use for the main "cake" part? Debbie says a 10 cup bowl - yeah I have no clue what size that would be.

(after doing a little secret math and picture analysis)

if that's a 14in board in the picture,
then ball is about 8in in diameter.

so if scaled it down to a 12in board (which, btw is only losing 1in on each side so to speak)

the ball would be about 6.85 -- or make it 7 and call it close enough.

HTH

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU EVERYONE!!!

The Fairy Teapot/ Pixie Teapot cake is in my photos and I just went to the fair yesterday and it had a first prize ribbon on it!!!!! I'm a little confused about how the judging works b/c it looked like some prizes hadn't been handed out yet - and it also looked like they had given two first prize ribbons in my category - but there were a lot of people and I was rushed and didn't have a chance to get a really good look at everything. I'm hoping to go back and get to post more pictures of the other cakes in the fair - and a picture of mine w/ it's blue ribbon!!!!!! icon_smile.gif
