I will post a pic of the concept of what I am trying to do. I will make the cake on Thursday.

I want to make a 2 tiered single layer cake in a scalloped pan. I want to cover the top tier's top in roses and the part of the top of the 2nd tier with roses. Should I ice the sides smooth or do a basket weave? Only family will see the cake.

Also what color scheme do you suggest?

The cake will be white with buttercream icing.

color -- mom's fav. of course.

and I'd do smooth sides -- enough texture going on w/ the roses.

Mom's favorite color is purple. Should I make the roses all the same color or should they be different shades of purple? I plan on the sides being white.

lovely design!!!! I would definitely make different shades of purple and mossy green leaves.. and I am with Doug...smooth sides...perhaps some vines trailing over the sides a bit...

I can't wait to see the finished cake!!!!

I agree with the smooth sides. How about different shades of purple and lavendar for the roses?

Please post a picture when you are done.

variety -- spice of life -- so definitely different shades..and if possible multiple shades in each flower

(think of loading bag w/ 2 or even 3 colors and color striping technique as well)

Lovely ideas. I will try to post a pic as soon as the cake is done.

Can I make roses today out of buttercream and freeze them until I am ready to put them on the cake Thursday? I normally do all cakes in one day but I thought if I could freeze the roses without them bleeding on the cake later it would save some time.

freeze them in a container that seals really well, and defrost them in it too so you don't have condensation problems

(this humidity is a killer!)

Well I finished the cake. It took me 3 hours not counting baking and cooling time. I was going to stripe the yellow roses but forgot until I already had the icing in the bag and I didn't want to have to use another bag. (What can I say I am cheap. lol) I think my roses would of been more planned out if my 3-year-old would of left me alone. He kept begging for icing. lol. I know I have too many dark purple roses together.

Be honest and let me know your opinions.

Your roses look great. I especially like the rose to the right with the dark purple on the outside.

Honest opinion, next time I would use fewer roses.

pretty.

possibly smaller roses on the bottom tier?

move of a spray of roses laid on top of cake effect for top???

(great job on striping the light purple roses)

Very pretty, I can't do roses either! The only thing i would have done is add a simple border around the bottom. thumbs_up.gif

I think a simple border along the bottom would finish it off... that said it is GORGEOUS!
