I just posted my son's wedding cake in my photos (bows). Not sure what I did wrong. Maybe too much icing underneath? Anyway, I traveled 9 hours by car with the cake so I guess it came out pretty good all in all. My question is what did I do wrong to cause the fondant to droop and sag down at the bottom of the tiers.
Of course, now that I see the pics I notice that I wasn't very careful with glueing my bows on with royal icing(you can see the icing). I also had lots of cracks which we hid pretty good with royal.
Any ideas? I was just sick to have the cake turn out like that. My son and daughter-in-law loved the cake. I got lots of great comments but my heart was just sick over it.
BTW....this pic was taken before the topper was added. Two GI Joes were on top (GI Joe and Lady J....lol, sounds funny but it was cute)

What a beautiful cake! I was expecting to see a catastrophe, but it is simply gorgeous! Miniscule flaws that only another decorator would notice.
My guess is, that 9 hour drive plus the weight of the fondant caused the cake to settle. I think the only way that could be avoided would be to trim the fondant 1/4 inch from the bottom. I've done that when I've covered softer cakes with fondant. I just knew they'd get 'squished'.
The first problem with this cake was trying to level it with the large Wilton leveler, it tore it to shreds and I had to try to glue it together with icing so the cake kept bulging and I had hoped the fondant would hold it together. Unfortunately, the fondant itself ended up drooping and also cracking.

Awww, I am so sorry! When I finally disposed of my Wilton leveler, I made sure it suffered as much as it had made me suffer! I don't know if you're in a position to invest in the Agbay leveler, but it literally added years to my life. Nothing like crying over a cake that doesn't even have a speck of icing on it yet!!! A pox on the Wilton leveler!!!
I really have to strain my eyes to find the drooping you mention - I think it turned out great! Maybe another decorator would notice its "imperfections" but I would be willing to bet you that everyone at the wedding just said "Wow what a gorgeous cake!" ![]()
