Can anybody tell me which is the best mat for rolling fondant or gumpaste. I have the Wilton one and I can't stand it. It's always rolling up on me. I know some people use silpat. How does that work out? Thanks!

I use a large piece of thickish vinyl (I cleaned it very well before I ever used it) that I bought at JoAnn's for about $3 (if I remember correctly). It works just as well for me as the expensive fondant mats. I just put a thin layer of Crisco on it (I got that great idea from a fellow CC'er!) and it works like a dream! I can cut it as large or small as I need, so I have several different sizes.

I bought a clear shower curtain, washed it and cut it into 4ths and use that. Works great. Also, those tupperware pastry mats work really well.

I love the large Roulpat Mat, it is like a Silpat but much larger. Expensive but I think worth it.

I use the thin 3-pack of cutting boards from Walmart. Flimsy things for actually cutting, but good size and flexibility for most of my other needs. The 3-pack, sold next to the other cutting boards, is about $2, and has a blue, green, and white mat. I use them to help hold a cake when torting, as well as using the white one (all are translucent, and can be read through easily) under the waxed paper for FBCT. The strength helped the FBCT not crack as my first one had.

For those that are using mats other than silpat...do you have to spread a thin coat of shortening all over to keep fondant from sticking?

Yes, I spread a thin coating of Crisco on the mat before putting rolling out the fondant. Works like a dream (and no white marks from powdered sugar!!!!)! icon_smile.gifthumbs_up.gif
