Hello,

I am fairly new to CakeCentral.com, and this is my first post. I love the look of gum paste flowers and I've been thinking about trying to make some myself. I've been reading about it (and bought the wilton starter kit with the instruction book) and I think I've got a good idea about how to make the flowers. But, it looks like a lot of people use petal dusts. I've read a couple of posts on here and kind of know what petal dust is...but I haven't seen anything on how you actually use the stuff! So any information would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks a lot!

The best way would probably get a book that shows you-with pictures- such as Cakes by Design by Scott Wooley or an Alan Dunn book. Dusts are usually applied with a dry paint brush.

Welcome welcome welcome..you'll love it!!!! You just brush the petal dust on dry with a paint brush ( one that's never been used in paint...of course) I bought that same wilton kit last NOv. to do my daughter's birthday cake and found Cake Central at the same time and I've been hooked since....on cakes and Cake Central LOL

I just colored my gumpaste....I didn't even know about petal dust then!!

You can begin with the Wilton set but it would not be my choice. The plastic cutters are too thick and you can't get a clean cut on gumpaste petals, the plastic ball tool does not thin petals well. You need really good quality tools. Here is an attachment of what I consider a good basic gumpaste flower kit.

Lucite Cell Board for rolling paste, this one is ridged on one side for making grooves in the petals, the wire is then fed through the groves. Smooth on the other side for rolling. Rolling pin, this one is 9" long. Yellow foam pad is for thinning edges of petals, and cupping them. Metal ball tool with two sizes of balls for thinning and ruffling petals. Floral tape for taping stems of flowers together, comes in many colors. Gum glue for attaching petals to one another, I keep mine in a new empty nail polish bottle, available at beauty supply, the brush is handy for putting the glue on petals. Metal flower cutters, silicone petal veiners for adding life like veins to petals, petal dust which comes in every color of the rainbow. Cloth covered wire for flower petals and leaves, I use #30 a lot but it comes in different gauges. Last would be good quality artist brushes for dusting petals with color. You can buy each of these items, including petal dust at.
