Just wondering if any of my CC friends have a loved one trapped in the Crandall Mine in Huntington. So sound off ladies and let me know if everything is ok......
For those of you who don't know, we had a mine collapse here in Utah today and there are 6 miners trapped. They don't know if the miners are ok, or how much rubble is around them. They are bringing in state of the are drills by helicopter and will begin trying to get an air shaft going by early morning. Meanwhile all we can do is wait.....
my thoughts and prayers are with them and their loved ones ...
I saw an interview with the mine owner this morning. Basically what he said was "We don't know if they are alive or not - and that is not my fault. We think an earthquake caused the collapse - so it is not our fault. We are trying 4 different methods of getting to the miners and so far nothing is going the way we want it to - and that is not my fault. I have a press release of all the equipment we have brought in to dig - see how much I am doing....." All the info we get is how none of this is the fault of the mine owners - who cares!! Get to the 6 men and get them out - how is that working? That is what we want to know!! This happened in a very small town and everyone there is very shaken - as you would expect. The best estimate is that it will take 2-3 days to get a ventillation hole dug to where the miners are - then they will know what injuries there are or if the miners are all alive or not. After that, it will still take a few days to actually get them out.
OK - my Utah girls - is everyone ok? Check in!!
You all probably have heard of the mine collapse here in Ky last year. My mind is blank on the name of the town right now but there was like 12 or 13 men trapped and only one survived. It was so horrible. All I could think about was how scared they must have been and how scared their families must have been. I stayed up practically all night watching the news and at one time they were reported to be all alive and were being rescued. And then came the heart stopping news that no they were not all alive and only one was alive and didn't know if he would live or not. I didn't know any of those men but I cried my eyes out as if they were my own family. The coal mining business is very close to my heart as my daddy, both grandfathers, and 4 uncles made a living working underground in the coal mines. Two of my uncles were featured in a magazine a least 40 years ago walking home from work. In a caption underneath them reads "And so are these men after a hard days work." I would definately say that going miles and miles underneath the ground to work and not knowing if you will ever see your family again is most certainly a hard days work, wouldn't you? All those men and their families are in my thoughts and prayers.

I did too - in fact that was the first thing that came to mind when this story first broke....that was so terrible

God bless them!! Good men -
So here is the latest - they were trying to dig to the men from inside the mine, but had to quit because of "sismic events" (spelling?) they are drilling from the top of the mountain down to where the miners are (about 1500 feet) but say that will take 2-3 days still and it may be as long as a week before they reach the miners. They are having a special mass in SLC tonight, everyone keep them and their families in your prayers....
this is just so sad. My grandpa was a coal miner and I remember going down into a coal shaft when I was little to see what it was like down there(with some miners and my dad) A few feet in I really just wanted to go back up to see the sun. So scary dark down there and it is such a underpaid dangerous job. I think everyone is just praying for a miracle at this point, I know I am.
I read on the internet just a few minutes ago that they haven't been able to hear any sound from any of the miners so needless to say i've had me a good cry. But there is hope because it was reported that they have an adequate air if they are still alive. It's like good news all mixed up with bad news. Just enough to give hope and just enough to take the hope back. I can only imagine the hell those families are going through. God Bless them every one.
So it has been a week now - there is still no sound coming from the mine - they have punched two holes through, but still have not found the miners. They found "survivable cavities" but when they checked the oxygen levels they were not high enough to sustain life. They have been pumping in oxygen for a few days now, but I wonder if it is too little too late. I am still praying for the families, and I truly hope they get the miracle they are hoping for.....
The funerals for the three mine workers have been happening the last few days....it is so sad. They have drilled 5 holes now, with still no sign of the trapped miners. The digging underground has stopped completely and they are not going to start it up again. They are drilling a sixth hole, looking for some kind of sign. It is starting to sound like they may just seal off the mine (because it is too dangerous to enter anymore) and leave the miners there......
Thoughts and prayers are with the families during this difficult time....
