so I was just asked to do a submarine cake. I think she would be thrilled if I could do a 3-D Submarine. I just have never done any carving of cake before, so I have a few questions before I get back to her about it.
What I do know is to use a firm cake and to freeze. Here is what I have questions about:
Should I just fill the layers with Buttercream (not filling)? I imagine as you are trying to carve it the filling could come oozing out.....
What exactly is the procedure...Freeze layers, fill, freeze again, carve?
Any other tips would be appreciated. Anyone know anything about doing a submarine BTW???
I would torte, fill with bc (less likely to make the cake shift on you) and then freeze and then carve.
Here is a pretty cool submarine cake

I'll bet you could use wilton's football pan and just flatten the top a big and add extra cake or even rice krispies depending on the servings you need to make the top part. This isn't completely 3-D but it looks cool to me. Also if you need a lot MORE servings you could always make it on a 1/2 sheet cake instead of dec. the cake board like this person did.
