Why You Shouldn't Start A Cake At The Last Minute...

We are having a baby shower tomorrow for a (male) co-worker that had a baby boy.

For some stupid reason, I thought it would be a great idea to wait until 8pm to start leveling, filling and decorating. I had to make the filling and the buttercream before I could even start anything.

I had no real plan going into this, and last minute I decided to do the whole thing in basket weave. That part I am happy with.
The only thing I know I wanted to do was a pair of fondant baby feet on top.

Once the cake was stacked and the basket weave finished I forgot about the feet and wrote "Congratulations" with a squiggly underline, a baby rattle and a pacifier. I have no idea why I did this. My writing is horrible. I guess I was just tired and wanted this thing finished. Now the rattle looks like something dirty icon_wink.gif and the pacifier looks like a b00b.

I should fix it but Im tired and I have no clue how.

Depending on how big your fondant feet are you could let the rattle and binky crust and then gently remove what you can an cover with your fondat feet! I have remove lots of things that I haven't liked after they crust. HTH

i had the same problem a few weeks ago. i had four cakes due and started the day before. i ended up staying up until 3 in the morning and i wasn't even finished. icon_sad.gif it was so frustrating and i ended up buying the lady two sheet cakes form the local grocer because i didn't finish the other two in time. icon_cry.gif

anyway - you can cut out a fondant circle and put that over your design and then put the foot on top of that like you planned.

LOL! If you hadn't said anything about it looking "dirty", I would not be laughing right now! I'm sorry, it's really funny. Maybe I'm just a little immature. icon_lol.gif

Ok, yes, you can remove it after it has crusted. Just take a little spatula or knife and lift it off. I like the basketweave.

Thanks for the laugh, heehee.

The cake looks great although I must say that the rattle does look a little x-rated. But hey, it's for a man so I think that the "dirtiness" of it fits right into the concept of men and babies!!!

I'm laughing too, and my impression of the rattle and pacifier would get me "bleeped", but the guy would probably love it just as it is.

If you are really unhappy with it (we're laughing with you, not at you), you surely can remove the offending parts and redo it when you have had some rest. Your basketweave looks great, wish I could do it that well! Janice

icon_lol.gif Now I have the giggles. It will look better when you are not so tired.

I agree with several others - place fondant decorations over the um hum parts. Fill in with some tiny buttercream flowers, if needed.

If all else fails, use a star tip and pipe concentric circles to cover the whole top, then repipe the message.

Go to sleep and get up 1/2 hour early so you can work your magic, and make it look like you dreamed.

Ok, I was planning on geting up early to fix this disaster, but for some reason I didn't hear the alarm and I woke up late!

I scrapped off the writing and everything else and threw some cake sparkles on the top. It worked out ok in the end I guess, but they all insisted on seeing a picture of the original.

The new father said he would have prefered the other one. Now I will know for next time.

Thanks for the laughs icon_smile.gif

I know how you feel, in august I was signed up for cake decorating and rabbits for the fair. . . well I decided that I was gonna do a rabbit cake and long story short, I didnt start til eight the night before too and I made my royal icing because the cake wasnt gonna be eaten, and I get it all colored and in the decorating bags, I try making a rose and I set it down and within five minutes it looked like a glob of icing. In other words I had made all of that icing too thin. . .So basically I had to start over and it worked out in the end after a long night, but by the time I got the icing fiasco figured out it was already 10:00 and I hadnt even started to bake the cake. It was fun though.

*laughing*... I'm glad you said what you did about what the rattle and pacifier looked like, because that was what I thought when I saw it and before I read your description. But I thought - I'm not gonna say it out loud - maybe it's just me!!

Glad it worked out well in the end!
