when I see a lot of pix on here, I notice that the base are really thick. They look like they are almost 1" thick. What are these? Foamcore? Wood? and where do you get it? It also looks like ribbon is placed around the edge or even fondant. How to adhere?

I use 1/2" foamcore and place 1/2" ribbon on the side using double sided tape or icing.

For relatively light cakes I use 1/2 inch foamboard. For heavy cakes, such as wedding cakes, I use 1/2 inch foamboard atop 1 or 2 pieces of masonite, which are about 1/8-inch thick each. For 3D cakes that have support dowels driven through the cakeboard, I use 2 layers of 1/2 inch foamboard. I attach ribbon around the edge with double sided hem tape.

My husband is a cabinet maker and all of my bases are 3/4in birch. he's always making me new sizes of boards out of his left over wood. works wonders, especially for heavy cakes.

Where do you buy the foam board and how do you cut it to size?

I get mine at Michael's when they are on sale (or use the 40% coupon). To cut it, I use a heated extacto knife.

What section of Michael's would you find it?

Hi,
We have a local shop that carries Wilton cake boards that I use for my wedding cakes or heavy cakes. They already come covered in your choice of silver or gold. But, if I want the base board to be a certain color I make it myself. I buy 3 to 4 cardboard plates ( from the supply store) stack them together and then use duct tape around the outside to hold them together. Then I buy the color foil that I want and then wrap the board in that, tapping it to the bottom and trimming the excess.
