Buttercream Versus Fondant Cakes
Decorating By berryblondeboys Updated 3 Oct 2006 , 2:20am by berryblondeboys
I have made exactly ONE fondant cake (reading abou t how to do it, versus taking any lessons). I'm pretty good at puttig things together, but pretty lousy artistically, so I don't think my calling is in fondant cakes, but... I am so amazed by these cakes in the gallery that I think I'll try my hand at it at least in a Wilton's class.
But, I need to know - how much longer does it take to prepare just icing? And then all those little decor?
Then, how would you price a fondant elegantly pieced together versus a buttercream?
Lastly, does ANYONE like the taste of fondant and eat it? or is it usually tossed aside to get to the cake?
Curious!

I'm a novice but loved the MMF (taste and texture). In class, we used the Wilton's of course. It tasted horrible (thrown to the side).
To me, both take equal amt. of time b/c I'm so slow. I'm hoping w/practice, I'll get quicker. Maybe I can find my calling (BCI or fondant) by then.

I love the look of fondant, but HATE the taste (especially the wilton one) MMF isnt bad, and maybe its a texture thing for me (having to chew my frosting bothers me) but I just dont like to eat it either. I just don't see myself doing a lot of fondant covered cakes, that said, I love using it as accents....(less throw away)...can't help you with the pricing though!
Personally, I don't like fondant. I use MMF when necessary (for my class). I'm partial to buttercream.
They look so cool and you could get away with a lot of cookie cutter type of things....
But do people BUY these things? Or is it "let's try it once" and now that we've tried it, let's go back to the yummier cake.
I like the idea of fondant accents - I'll have to incoroporate that for sure.
