Saturday night we took the kids to one of their friends birthday parties. It was a total last minute thing & the mom had run to Wal-Mart for cake & cupcakes. My husband & I each took a cupcake, and it was NOT GOOD. We have had Wal-Mart in the past, but didn't remember their stuff being quite so gross. The cupcake wasn't too bad, kind of dry, but the frosting was just nasty. It was really greasy and tasted like I imagine Crisco would taste straight out of the can with a bit of color added to it. ICK ICK ICK. So on Sunday I had to make something to erase that memory. I made the chocolate cake from the Hershey's label and it was fabulous. Much, much better!

DH does the same thing!
Every year for 30 years we've ordered Christmas goodies from a place in Wisconsin. THIS year he's going through the catalog saying "You could do that... I bet you have a recipe for that... you could make that one... that's terrible, you would make it look better than that...
For heaven's sake! I 've only been doing this since June! At least he has faith. ![]()
I've never had a Wal Mart cake, sounds like I won't plan to!! But the "Cake Snob" thing made me laugh! My SIL always says I've made her into a cake snob. She is a social butterfly and goes to alot of functions of all sorts, and says none of the other cakes she sees hold a candle to mine. Whether thats true or not, ??? but, you gotta love a SIL like that!
I like that.....cake snob.....how funny!
But I too have created a monster....my kids come home and comment on 'goodies' that have been brought into class and how 'Mom, you could have made it so much better'.
Awww, how sweet! And you know kids don't just say stuff like that unless they mean it.

I totally agree though, the more baking I do, the bigger the "cake snob" I become because I don't eat much cake anymore so I'm pickier about the ones I do eat ![]()

Of course, there is one "uppety up" grocery store near here that is suppose to be top-of-the-line desserts. We got some of their cake for my b-day, and imagine Swiss Meringue but instead of butter, it was all Crisco (BLECK!).. It was the FIRST time my DH realized that "All Cake is NOT created equal".
KHalstead...Thanks for the kind words. I love your cookies!
Yes, I confess I am a cake snob. I went to a funeral last week where we all brought food and just for fun I tried !/2 a chocolate chip cookie (out of the tube from the grocery store, 1/2 a brownie (way too dry and overdone), and a white cupcake with yellow icing. Cupcake was too dry and the icing was lemon flavored out of the can. Boo Hoo, I didn't care too much about the other disappointments but I LOVE LEMON. I should just know better to stay away from store bought stuff, huh?
All I can say is, when you've had the real deal it is so hard to go back!
