I'd rather of had $1000.00 in that wallet than all of my family's social security #'s. I would definately be checking my credit report for a long time to come. Identity theft is becoming a major problem for so many people. I just watched a movie on Lifetime about a woman who had her identity stolen and she just about lost everything she had because of the crazy woman who stole her SS#. I would be sick too! So sorry this happened to you.

You need to contact the 3 major credit agencies and put an alert all everyone's SSN. This way if the person who took this should happen to try anything with the numbers you will know about it quickly. We had to do this with my DH's # because someone opened up a phone with his number and ran up an $800 phone bill in a months time. Luckily, that is the only thing they opened. When we bought our vehicle, the credit agency called us 2 days after we bought it and asked if it was us who purchased the vehicle. A lot can happen in a few days but just think it it was more like 6 months before you found out!

I agree with Dordee - I would rather them steal my money than my identity! It took me over 3 days to get this mess staightened out with my husband's SSN. You should also call the police and file a police report.

It is a shame that the world has come to so many dishonest people.

I'm with them, would rather loose my money than my Soc. sec. cards.
Make sure to notify everyone ASAP!!!!! Lots of things can happen if someone gets your social. Also, you should never carry your socials with you but have them under lock and key.---sorry, I know it's too late to hear that advice--- I wish you the best, sorry this happend to you, I know it has to be frustrating and make you sick to your stomach.

This happened to me a few years ago while I was in the funeral home for my Grandpa's funeral. I had to cancel everything. I now keep everything locked up at home. Sorry this happened to you. I hope everything works out in the end.

This happened to me about 8 years ago...only I was shopping had the purse in the front of the cart but was looking with a friend at some closet organizers......we were both right there and I was leaning against the cart!!! Neither one of even noticed anyone else in the isle let alone that they stole my purse......I immediately called my cell phone and the little buggers answered (though they didnt say anything just breathed) so i called cell phone company and police and everything from the store.....they ended up throwing my purse out the window in an intersection and a nice man called me and returned it to me.......... minus some cash (but not much) and all my credit cards..........anyway.....by the time I had called the credit card companies (which was a matter of maybe 2 hours) the buggers had already filled up every car tank I think they could find at a pay at the pump machine (I didnt have to pay for that thank goodness because I had a police report #)....someone found my credit cards in the parking lot of a local casino (once they found out they all had been canceled I suppose) so I ended up getting everything back, but what a hard few months........the bank immediately closed my accounts and opened new ones saying they would let my 4 outstanding checks go through because they would put a note on the account, but the clearing house for the bank didnt read the note and bounced everyone of them (and one of the checks was my very first house pmt) I was mortified!!! Anyway the bank wrote letters indicating all the bounced checks were their fault and I had to fax and mail those letters to my mortgage company and to the big credit agencies.... it was such a pain!

You have to be SOOO very careful, my social security number was SOLD to an illegal immigrant. One of the students who worked in the admissions office of the college made quite the fortune in his low income housing complex. He went through all the incoming records, and wrote down hundreds of social security cards, then went into his community and sold them to his neighbors. It was a long time before I realized it had happened, but the person who was lucky enough to BUY my number felt free to us it for several years, on and off. telephone bills, cell phones, utilities and even the Illinois DMV, He went and got HIS DRIVERS LIC. With MY social. It took me YEARS to get it all worked out, and some of the companies still made me pay bills in order to clear my name, even though I am OBVIOUSLY not a Hector Gonzalez. Even when I married, and went to the DMV, they STILL had him on the records and the poor guy had either tried to use it again, or passed it off to someone else for them to use. So, when I married they actually CHANGED my number for me because of the HUGE amount of fraud that was associatted with that number... NEVER carry your cards with you and be VERY careful who you give your number to. That number is attached to every aspect of our lives, including any and all retirement/disablity rights we might get in the future.
The only good thing was, that all the taxes he paid and social security wages that he paid while using my number to work, were filed to my account, HA! and when they moved my number those funds went with it, I guess eventually I got something out of all the trouble.. but it doesn't even start to even out the years of issues i've had.

Gosh what horror stories you guys have im sorry that all that bad stuff happend. mine actually has a good ending. my husband found my day planner in the office at taco bell with everything still in it. so I can breath a little easier even though all my accounts had already been cancelled. its wierd though because i had went back to taco bell and they told me it was not there and then I had called several times and was told it was not there. and when my DH went up there they told him they had looked in the office and it was not there but my DH as persasive as he can be got them to let him peak into the office himslef and my dayplanner was right on the desk???? I dont get it but thank god its back. As far as my ssn cards being with me I usally keep them in a lock box at home but I recently moved and had them with me while setting up new bank accounts and getting the kids enrolled and school and things. believe me they are now safely locked away agian. and im happy to have my book back I think I will chain it around my neck that wouldnt look funny at all right thumbs_up.gif

wow heather, that is a great ending, but it makes you wonder what they were doing with your planner and why they said they didn't have it . . . . that's a little creepy. Good thing your hubby was pushy about it. I can't believe the balls all these crooks have to do all this identity theft stuff. It is amazing how they get away with it so much and so easily.

I am so glad you found it! I was actually about to suggest checking to see if they had a surveillance camera b/c a friend of mine's mother left her purse at a fast food place, went back less than 10 minutes later to get it and it was gone. The police found the purse, minus cash, in the dumpster behind the store. Then the police had to force the owner to turn over the store video b/c as it turned out the EMPLOYEES stole the purse and the owner knew it.

I agree you should push the issue with the manager as to why they told you it wasn't there. There's no way I would let this go. They are giving you the run around and it sounds like something fishy is going on. Take your DH with you if you have to, but I would keep on until I got real answers.

wow, so glad this turned out good...all that important info in there! Maybe they were just lazy about looking to see if it was there when you called?

I had my purse stolen a few years ago myself. I'd accidently left it in the front seat of my van when I took my sleeping kid into the house. Then a few hours later, I had friends over and we were sitting out on the driveway by the garage with the door open while the kids were playing with sidewalk chalk and forgot to close the garage door when we went back in. Some theives just happened to come along that day and go into my garage while we were all in the next room over and got my purse right out of my van! icon_surprised.gif I had just gone to the bank that day so my checkbook was in there (I usually leave it at home) and they used several of my checks even though I'd closed my checking account and opened a new one. They also used a couple credit cards at the gas station (what's with gas stations and crooks?). Anyway, I needed the police report to let the stores know that I didn't write those checks in their stores. The police did find my purse the next street over though and all the contents of my purse, minus my wallet had been dumped at my neighbor's side yard.

Having your purse stolen really really sucks.

Heather I am so glad you got it back. I think the reason they said they didn't have it is more to do with laziness than creepiness. The kids who work there probably didn't take the time to devote any actual brain cells to it, even the one who probably took it from the customer (or found it themselves) didn't give it more than a passing "hmmm" before putting it back on the desk. They just couldn't be bothered. That seems to be the way the youth of America is swinging these days. icon_rolleyes.gif
