Ok - here is a question for you all. I have a "shotgun" bride who wants her four tiers completely covered in small/medium flowers of all types - she does not want to see the the cake - just the flowers. I am estimating that it will take (with breakage) about 1000 flowers to cover her cake. She is willing to pay $$$$ for this cake and the short notice.

Do you all think it would be okay if I just ordered them from a supplier? I have not suggested this to her, but I think that she might like sitting down and looking at all the different types and be able to pick which ones she wants. I don't want her to think that I don't want to do all the flowers, especially since she is willing to pay, but - OH MY GOSH!!!! - I think my back would break.

Please help! Any suggestions?

I think it would totally be okay to give her that option. You can always let her know that particular flowers are your speciality and others not as much. That way she feels like you are giving her the ability to have exactly what she wants and you don't have to spend a week at the chiropractors office after her wedding. icon_wink.gif

I think you could order them if she agrees. Just explain to her that the "short notice" may not allow you to get that many flowers done in time for her wedding. It will definitely open her up to the idea!

How much time do you have before the wedding??
It might be your only option if she wants it in a week or less...1000 flowers drying time plus baking, icing and covering cakes...can you even get premade shipped that fast???

Don't order from a supplier. You CAN do this.

Small flowers completely covering the cake. Royal icing to the rescue.

Drop flowers are the most ignored flower but if done well, can be beautiful. The most beautiful wedding cake I ever saw was done in fall colored drop flowers.

Also, rosebuds and half roses are quite easy. Royal icing again.

These are flowers that are small, dry fast (royal icing) and are beautiful.

You can crank these out in no time. 1000 would be no problem quickly.

If you manage to find a great, reasonably priced supplier, who does all the flowers she wants, then I would suggest going that way! It might even work out cheaper for her. How much notice do you have on this cake? It might be that you have no choice but to buy ready-made from the time aspect alone! A 1000 flowers are going to take a long time to make and dry in time. I would just ask if she minds if you buy them, or at least some of them due to the time constraints. Good luck!

Depends on how much time you have....If you just don't have time on your side I would order the flowers.....if you have a few weeks...I agree with CakeLady232...You can do it!!! You don't have to make huge flowers..maybe a few...and the rest small.they really don't take much time to do once you get into the rythmn.

In my neck of the woods, that would not be "cheating" at all. But I would consider making some of the flowers and ordering the rest. There's only ONE of you right? Give yourself a break. icon_smile.gif

Order from a supplier!! That's what they are there for.

I don't see why you would even feel badly about that. It's not "cheating", you are providing her with the item she requested...whether you made 100% of it or not!

And don't neglect to pay yourself for sourcing them and even travelling to pick them up if need be. You should add on a % to their actual cost, for sure!!

I have a month notice, but with all my Halloween orders - I just don't know. I can't turn down the money or the business.

She wants hyacinths, fruit blossoms, lilies, daisies, forget me nots, tiny calla lilies, tea roses, hibiscus, but not a "regular" rose. Her grandmother was really into flowers (blue ribbon fair stuff) and I think she wants to honor her.

Oh well - I think I will make suggestion about supplier - she might enjoy looking through all the different varieties, colors, options.

Not to throw a wrench in the works, but if this cake is going to be completely covered in flowers, people are going to end up with flowers on their plate. Some will scrape them off, some will inevitably munch on them. The real question here is not whether you are 'cheating', but whether you are willing to purchase pre-made dried flowers and have people eat them, thinking you made them. Have you ordered these before and found them to be pleasant tasting? That would be my only reservation! If they are good, (never said they wouldn't be!!) then by all means it's not 'cheating'. It's totally acceptable, especially if there are time constraints, etc. I do agree though that small flowers wouldn't be hard to crank out! Sometimes I get going and don't even realize how many I have. I go to put them on the cake and have a billion left! icon_lol.gif

I have ordered royal icing flowers and a few gumpaste sprays before. I find that most people just push aside the flowers anyway.

I am so confused.

BUT - I do know that if I keep talking about it and not make a decision - neither choice is going to work!!! icon_lol.gif

Thanks everyone!!!!!
