My Very First Cake Competition!!

i was so excited!!! the competition was for the williamson county (tennessee) fair, and i took second place. i was the most nervous over getting it done in time and transporting it safely!!!
the theme was celebration, which is kind of broad, but i was sure that i didn't want to go with all the obvious things. i contemplated going with "celebration of life" and breast cancer, but ended up going with our national anthem "a song of celebration". the other girl ended up with 5 more points to beat me in the "theme" part of the judging.
the bottom tier is white fondant overlayed with red fondant stripes, painted with glycerin for shine. i added "stitching" also to the edges of the red. the middle tier is fondant, and with gumpaste stars. the top tier was carved, and represented fort mchenry, which is the battle that inspired the lyrics of our national anthem, "star spangled banner". i molded the ship our of gumpaste and handpainted it. the "rockets" are wire and royal icing. ship is "floating" in piping gel. the fort walls were bricked using an impression mat, and then airbrushed burgandy, although they look purple in the photo.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR LOOKING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
