with trying to figure out how to do the back of my Tow Mater cake. I am doing a Tow Mater cake for my newphew's birthday next week and I am having a big problem making the pieces for the back part of Mater - that is, the pulley part and the crane, etc. I have started with using dowels and ice cream sticks and covering them in fondant and glueing them with royal icing, but it keeps breaking apart and I am trying to figure out what else I can use to make this back part. PLEASE - can anyone help me with what else I can do . . . all of you Mater cake makers that I have seen that have done such an amazing job - PLEASE can you help!

I have not personally tried it but I'm wondering if licorice would work?

Good luck!

duranaco - thank you for the reply, but licorice is not strong enough to stand up.

Try making them from gumpaste. It will dry quicker than fondant and allow you to get the exact shapes you want. If you don't make them too thick the gumpaste should be dry in a few days. icon_biggrin.gif You can buy the Wilton gumpaste mix in most craft stores and it works fine for this type of an application.
