Doug-I have to ask you-how does one go about eating a pigs foot? Do you cut the meat off the bone, or eat it like corn on the cob? I can't even imagine the smell of pigs feet and limburger cheese!

oh dear, I am so very fortunate to have a mother who had such nice meals and clean habits!

My kiddo, niece and I always do lunch with my Grandmother every tuesday....its always wonder what we are going to eat kind of thing....for me the worst is toasted cheese sandwiches....perhaps I am a cheese snob but I do not think all American Singles are created equal and I think the generic brands (at least the one grandma buys) are DISGUSTING.....and she just toasts the bread in the toaster and then zaps the sandwich in the microwave to "melt" (I use that term loosely cause cheapo cheese doesnt really melt)........the generic cheese........I choke them down cause i have to set a good example but I HATE THEM.......

my next least favorite meal is when she grinds up roast beef ands mayo and pickle relish to it and makes sandwiches out of it.........if you could only see what it looks like (its not horrible tasting---not good but not horrible) but it looks like well I wont go there.

My mom never did anything really gross. My step dad when we moved into his house however... he had a coffee can filled with bacon grease. Okay, I wouldn't save my bacon grease but people DO and it's always in the fridge. This was sitting plain as day on the counter top not cold. He would throw it into his green beans. thumbsdown.gif
He also kept his condiments on the counter and one day asked me if I wanted mayo on my sandwich. "uhh, no thanks." yet he kept the syrup in the fridge? icon_confused.gif
My grandma used to "clear" her throat and then spit into the sink. ewww then just rinse it down.
At a friend's house the cat licked the butter and her mom just scraped the top off and made us toast. I wasn't hungry.

My mom gave us kids cracked wheat cereal one morning. The problem was--it didn't contain just cracked wheat. I said something to her and she said, "shut up and eat your cereal."!

This is more of a "my mom is a rotten cook" story, but with a family of 6 kids, we ate a lot of soup beans and corn bread type of meals. Except my mom couldn't cook something as simple as beans!

Most people cook them with some ham or bacon flavoring. She rarely had that on hand, so instead of adding maybe butter, she'd add Crisco (hey, fat is fat, right? icon_confused.gif ). Except she was the "if a little is good then a lot is better!" type, so she'd plop almost a full 3-lb can of Crisco into a big pot of beans! It was the only food in our house that ever had leftovers (wonder why none of us liked them? icon_confused.gif ), so the next day, the bowl of beans in the 'frig had a layer of cold grease at least 1/2" thick on top of it!

And she'd heat them up for dinner the next day.

(we actually LIKED school cafeteria food, that's how bad she was!)

That is gross adding the completely flavorless and 100% fat Crisco into the beans.

As far as school lunch .... today school lunches are very good! I'm a lunch lady.

My mom was a wonderful cook and homemaker, thank heavens. But one memory I have that's kind of funny is that chicken wings used to be cheap a long time ago. Since we were poor, we ate lots of them. When I first moved out of the house, I don't think I ate any kind of chicken for about six months! icon_razz.gif I love it now, though! thumbs_up.gif

Amen to that! I'm constantly amazed when I visit my kids' schools for lunch and actually eat there! icon_smile.gif When we were in school, I remember cornbread w/ chocolate frosting=Cake, Frozen Pizza (STILL frozen), fruit salad w/ a baby roach in it YUMM icon_razz.gif , french fries drained on wax paper icon_confused.gif , AND A big roach leg in the turkey/dressing!!! We had to eat school lunch because it was free for us icon_cry.gif Why couldn't the school food have been like it is now? icon_rolleyes.gif

Lynda-bob-At least your school HAD a lunch room. I went to a small school that didn't have one, and our lunches were catered in by the Dairy Queen, Pizza Hut, and Pap's Fried Chicken. I want to throw up every time I see a Pizza Hut!

icon_lol.gif Sorry, I guess even a good thing can be ruined, huh? Maybe I should've just thought of those roaches as a protein other than chicken icon_razz.gificon_lol.gif
