I have been approached by the owner of a local coffee shop about baking sugar cookies for her. She wants a sample next week. She asked about pricing. Off the top of my head, I said .50 per cookie for basic frosted sugar cookie. How does that figure sound? Hope I didn't sell myself short. I thought I'd do just simple round cookies w/her business name on them and a few that were a little fancier maybe in the shape of a coffe cup. And then price the fancier ones a little higher? Also thought I'd take in a few cake balls/truffles. I appreciate any input. Aslo wondering about a good cookie cutter company. I'm looking for a coffee cup and so far haven't found anything I like.

I think that's pretty cheap!! You might have been better off asking her how much she plans to sell cookies for and what kind of a profit she wants to make and tell her you'd find something in her"budget" I think that's pretty cheap for a decorated cookie of any kind.

I guess it depends on where you are but that is pretty cheap for hear. I wouldn't want to put all that work in for so little, but maybe i'm just lazy and don't want to work that hard for my money.

yikes! icon_eek.gif that sounds too cheap to me. Are you going to deliver them to her as well? I think 50 cents is okay for a plain cookie, but not one you have iced...and certainly not one you have detailed with her business name!

As for the coffe cup cutter, try www.cookiecutter.com They are all about $1-$2 there. I think I bought my tea-cup cutter there? That may be the closest to a coffee mug.

I'm in agreement with what everyone has said so far. Unless those cookies are about an inch in size, you should be charging much more. I like the $1 per inch rule (give or take a little depending on the level of detail).

I agree with all the above....$1 per inch is a fair price. I was offered $1 per cookie by one store who I know sell them for $5-6 a piece. Don't sell yourself short. It is hard to raise your prices once people get used to your original ones-believe me, I know.

I think you should make a batch of cookies. Figure out how much the ingredients costs, how much time it took to make and ice the cookies..... and then figure out a profit margin for yourself that will make it worth it for you to produce. I think the price you are thinking of will sell you short!
Good Luck.

I know that a few local coffee shops in my area mark their dessert items up 3x's what they buy them for. These cookies are custom made and I think .50 is not enough to charge. I would ask what price point she wanted to be at and maybe design the cookies around that, making sure you are being paid for your time and effort. Good Luck! icon_smile.gif

Well, 1 recipe of the No Fail Sugar Cookies costs me like $3.50 (a little less, but not sure right now). And royal icing isn't much either- BUT the main consideration is your time. Because, even a simple round cookie takes awhile when you consider quantity.

Your best bet is to figure out how much they cost you, and how long it will take, and see how much you think your time is worth, and of course factoring in your location. I figure my time is definitely worth more than 50 cents a cookie ;o)

Too cheap!! She'll probably sell them for 2.50-4.00 and will make out like a fat rat, and she did not have to hit a lick. The idea is to make money, not give it away. REfigure the price, yout are worth more then that.
