I know I'm not a professional by any means, so I pretty much "bake cakes and give them away" to people I know.
I've thought about printing up some comment cards to go along w/ the cake, and request that they fill out what they do or don't like so I can keep it in my records. Would this be a good idea or not?

I don't think it could hurt. Besides practice, I can't really think of any other ways for improvement.

I think that is a great idea. I would suggest printing them up on postcards then having a stamp on them already... Or a self-addressed envelope (but postcards are a little cheaper to send) Then all they have to do is fill out and send and I think you are more likely to receive a response.

Great idea!
