Fresh Roses, Flower Spikes, No Spikes ... In The Cake

i'm working on this cake today...just had a question regarding the wilton flower spikes. i am going to insert them to hold the flowers for the two top tiers, but for the bottom, where the cake is tilted, the flowers have no cake to go into...they will rest on the fondant covered cake board. how far in advance can i arrange the fresh roses so they dont look wilted at party time? i'm setting up about 4 hours prior to serving, but i will be able to add flowers up until an hour and a half before. after that, people will be around. i rarely use fresh flowers, so i am kind of feeling nervous...help please ?
I'm no flower expert, but if it helps, I just set up for a wedding this afternoon at 3:00 and the florist was there and put the flower toppers on the cakes. The wedding isn't until 6:30 tonight. If they feel confident that those flowers will last all night, I would be confident about yours too. Just my two cents.
