You know how you can buy some "salon" shampoos at Target like Paul Mitchell and others, do you think that it's actually the same shampoo as at the salon? I have heard different things so I thought I'd ask my CCers!

If it's a reputable store then yes, but if it's a tiny little hole in the wall, then you may br more likely to run into shady store owners that try the swaperoo.... I bought some KMS conditioner from the grocery outlet - it was literally baby lotion in the bottles.

I returned it and the lady didn't want to take it back but then the owner came out and he knows me so he knows I wouldn't do that..... people suck.

I am a hairstylist ............the products guaranteed the unless bought at a salon or professional beauty store.
Most of these products are watered down so you use so much more.

I have seen Paul Mitchell in commercials where he said something like...If you don't buy my product in a salon, then it isn't my product. I don't remember HIS exact wording, but he was basically saying if you get it anywhere but a salon, it isn't mine. I'm sure if it is, it's watered down like someone else said. I use Herbal Essance, so it doesn't matter to me icon_lol.gif

flava ... thanks for asking this question! I have always wondered, too. I mean, the bottles are real, but who knows what's really in them? I love the Suave products that bodaisy mentioned!! They are so cheap, and they smell and seem to work just like the real thing!! My favorite are the Suave shampoo and conditioner that are like the Matrix Amplify products. They smell sooooooooooooo good!! I am a big "smell" person, so I always have to smell products before I buy them. I always feel like such an idiot when I squeeze a bottle in the store to smell it and end up with shampoo, lotion, hand soap, etc. on my nose!!!!!!! Hahaha!! At least then I get to smell it for the rest of the day!!! icon_lol.gificon_lol.gif

Anyway, thanks again for asking this!! icon_smile.gif

Pantene and suave among other grocery store shampoo's are one of the worst you can buy...they strip the moisture out of you hair .
They contain too much sulfate something(can't think of the word right now) same ingredient used in laundry detergents .
I am just giving you guys information that i have learned throughtout my career. icon_smile.gif

this is interesting isn't it??... I've always been a suave girl.. I use all of their products. My sister is a manager for a salon and she told me that the best stuff on the market for a good priced shampoo was suave.. I suppose since everyone's hair type is different it's a preference thing...

good luck. I hope you find something that you really like!!!

Sometimes I wish they'd make perfume in those scents!!! icon_lol.gificon_lol.gif I haven't smelled the new Snuggle yet, but I'll make sure to do it the next time I go to the store!

Funny!! Bath and Body works used to have a lotion/body spray, etc. that was called cotton blossom or something like that, and it smelled like fresh clean clothes. icon_cool.gif (They probably still have it, I'm not sure)

cakesbyjess- I smell everything too! That's funny.
My name is jess too. Well, Jessica but my friends and family call me Jesse or Jess.

I don't know what the heck kind of shampoo to use. The salon stuff is so expensive but I personally can really tell a difference in my hair when I use the cheap stuff! I haven't tried Suave though, so I think I'll try it. thumbs_up.gif

another vote for Sauve

vanilla and burnt sugar scented.....

makes me smell like a big sugar cookie!

and my mom was a beautician (the ol' fashioned kind)

she'd buy the shampoo by the gallon at the beauty supply and them cut it 1/2 and 1/2 w/ water. worked just fine.

if you mean all that OIL ....then that must be why I like it! (surprised none of the big oil companies never went drilling for oil on my head....as greasy as my hair can get!)

Of course it is fine ...... but.......the amount of shampoo you use is more compared to the concentrated version .
Where a salon bought product(concentrated version) would last you six months the watered down version would last you probably two months because you use more....tada..

I'm so happy to hear that other people like to smell products, too! icon_smile.gif I love when I see a new scent of lotion/shampoo/body wash/deodorant/detergent (you get the point) and get to smell it!!!! icon_lol.gif

I love salon shampoo, but I just can't justify spending soooo much on it! I definitely recommend the Suave Professionals line (http://www.suave.com/collections.aspx?kind=coll&sec=coll&coll=Professionals&cat=Shampoo). Like you, I can tell a difference in my hair when I use cheap shampoo, but not with Suave!! thumbs_up.gif

i really like infusuim, it seems to work the best. not as cheap as sauve, but cheaper than paul mitchel. my daughter has nturally curly hair and nothing really works on her hair, its naturally dry and we have tried everything. the stuff thats works the best so far is garnier fructese(?spell)
at least she likes it. i still swear by infusium.

Personally, I use only Aveda products. Their "smells" are out of this world. So clean.

I too, many times over have ended up with shampoo, lotion, soap, etc... on my nose. And everytime, I say to myself, DONT SQUEEZE THE BOTTLE SO HARD, Dumba--- icon_lol.gificon_lol.gif K'ly

I'm also a fan of the smelling! Good scent plays a fairly big role in deciding whether or not I'm going to buy the product. Might seem silly, but not to me. icon_rolleyes.gif

I find that Pantene works really well in my hair, but somebody on this thread said it is the worst. Hmmmm. To be honest, I find that it works better than most of the drug store brands because it is sligthly more expensive. Sometimes it seems like my hair can sense when I'm using cheaper shampoo and conditioner. It decides to remain knotty.

My hair is so thick and dry, always. I NEED to use conditioner. I was wondering if anyone can suggest the best shampoo/conditioner for thick, dry, misbehaving hair?

I have used The Detangler conditioner by Paul Mitchell for years and I love it! I used to get so many compliments on my hair but It's just getting too expensive now that I have three kids 2 and under so I've been looking for something that will work similar to that.
cakesbyjess suggested Suave Professionals and she said that was similar to Paul Mitchell so I'm going to try that and I'll let you know how it works out for me! icon_biggrin.gif

Samy went commercial and his stuff is not the same! I can very certainly tell a BIG difference in the products! I used to love his salon products, he had a detangling styling gel and a product called "silk appeal" that was just incredible! The first product has been taken out of production and the second one is completely different! His "original" salon products no longer exists, just the cheap crap now. His shampoo and conditioners used to detangle my mangled mop but now I swear the stuff that is available in places like Target with his name on it makes my hair even more tangled! I asked my hair dresser (a good friend too) and her opinion based on info from her product suppliers is that the stuff that is OTC is not the same product but a cheap watered down version with a similar label. I'm now on a search to find a line of product(s) that will tame my tresses!

And Yes, it must smell good too! Samy used to smell great, the stuff now doesn't!

Hmmm...I have always used Nexxus products. I LOVE them...I once got a REALLY bad perm...my hair was fried...Nexxus fixed it in about a week. I recently started buying it from the grocery store (I don't think it's cheaper this way...just more convenient) and I don't notice a difference in the product...I use the same amount and it preforms the same for me. BTW...I am a "smeller" too! LOL! If you wanna smell something amazing you gotta smell the Nexxus Therappe shampoo and Humectress conditioner!!!

So what would you suggest? I don't have big bucks to spend on Salon stuff. Is there anything I can buy at the drug store that will work? Or am I doomed?
