I have been reading how Luster Dust is the best thing since disposable decorating bags and I just had to try it out. I forced my husband to drive me 50 miles just to get some (where I live Wal-Mart is the mall). Needless to say I could not wait to use it and it was a disaster. I mix it with lemon extract, didn't work. I mixed it with Belvedere Vodka (honeys drink of choice) and it still didn't work. If anyone can help I would be grateful icon_cry.gif .

Can't say that I ever mixed it with anything...I just brush it on dry. I 've used it with gumpaste, fondant and BC.

I guess that would help. I used the wilton luster dust. I made a string of pearls from mmf let them dry overnight then tried to paint them with the lust dust and it clumped when I painted it on. I tried with the pearl and the pink color same thing happened both times.

What kind of luster dust did you use? A while back I bought some of the Wilton "sparkle dust" or whatever it's called and thought it would work the same as what I saw on other peoples cakes and was very, VERY wrong!

It didn't dissolve in extract or vodka and wouldn't do anything I thought it should do. Come to find out it's not meant for that but rather to be sprinkled onto icing, etc.

If that's the kind you bought that could be your problem. After my little fiasco with the Wilton stuff I bought some from www.wholesalesugarflowers.com and I LOVE it.

Hope that helps!

I used CK Luster Dust, put 1/4 teaspoon in a tiny bowl with a lid. In went my pearls, pop the lid on and roll them around and around. I just left what ever pearls I had left over in the dusty container and add more pearls as I need them.

okay, that was your problem......wilton doesn't make a luster dust.......they only make shimmer dust which is completely different. The wilton stuff is more granular than luster dust.....luster dust is actually a dust....they are totally different. You need to find a cake decorating store or order some from the net!!

Thank you so much I was beginning to think something was wrong with me. One more question what can I use the shimmer dust for?

My Wilton instructor sprinkled it on all her royal icing flowers before drying them.
