I am not 100% but i think that black forest is just choc cake with a whipped topping and a can of Cherrie pie filling on the top. Where i worked i put cake crumbs around the sides of the cake to give it a certain look. I know there are other ways to do it but this is how i would make it. Hope this helps.

Here are several recipes for black forest cake. I usually make a dam around the top layer and then fill it with the cherry pie filling.

OMG, is this cake to be eaten or used as a fashion accessory? icon_eek.gif

I've always had this cake frosted with chocolate b/c, but that could be a U.S. adaptation because the traditional whipping cream frosting is less stable/more perishable.

Here's what wikipedia says on (German) Black Forest Cake:

For more stability (and no refrigeration) you could use Rich's Bettercreme in place of the whipped cream frosting.

Here's a Black Forest Cake decorated with crumbs on the sides:

or do a google search for black forest cake and you will find many different versions. Hope that helps a little.

Here's a decorated one that I did: http://www.cakecentral.com/modules.php?name=gallery&file=displayimage&pid=494313
Undecorated for dessert:

Maybe you can keep it neutral by covering the top with some more whipped cream (piped right over the cherries), then maybe covering the entire thing with chocolate shavings with a simple fondant or gumpaste banner with the birthday message?
Good luck, it's a pretty easy cake to put together.
