I'm doing a wedding cake this weekend and this is the first time I've used a figurine cake topper. The Wilton books say to cut cake board to fit and place on cake to protect the cake and topper. But won't the edges of the board show? The figurine has a solid base. Couldn't I just put a few dowel rods in the cake for support and be done? Maybe it's just that simple. Thought I better ask in case there is some unforseen disaster!! Seems like the "simple" things always cause me trouble! TIA

How heavy is it?

I had a wedding with this topper: http://cgi.ebay.com/Bridal-Wedding-Accessorie-Cake-Topper-Figurine-Together_W0QQitemZ180143322043QQihZ008QQcategoryZ20935QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem and it is quite heavy. I insert 2-3 dowel rods in the top tier, cut a circle from a white, styrofoam plate, set the plate on the dowels and set the figurine on the plate. Since it was white on white, it couldn't be seen. You can add flowers around the base if needed.

I've had this one a number of times: http://www.wilton.com/store/site/product.cfm?id=3E31414E-475A-BAC0-57F110B62A57BB96&fid=640545C4-475A-BAC0-571B82E83CDC83D0 (without the musical base). I just sit it directly on the cake ... .no dowels and no cardboard or support plate.

Most toppers I've dealt with don't need a cardboard or anything to support it.

I agree with indydebi. Is it a tall topper? I have placed miniature RI roses around the base of a topper before and it covered any gaps that may be there if it's a BC cake. If it's fondant, I'd do the same. I have a picture in my gallery of a white wedding cake with white and purple RI flowers. I put the mini roses around the base of the topper. They helped hold it in place too. Of course the cake isn't moved once the topper is put on hopefully! icon_rolleyes.gif

The topper weighs 3/4 pound and is 5 1/2" tall. It's the "Elegance" topper from Wilton. The cake is a 3 tier buttercream with satin ribbons wrapped around it and a pearl bead border. So, I can't put flowers around it. I was thinking of putting a couple dowel rods in, but maybe it'll be fine with only the support of the one center dowel that holds all the cakes together? If you can put that music box on without any support, I'm sure this would be fine. I would think the music box is heavier. Thanks so much. I appreciate your help. I'm sure I'm worrying way to much about it. This is my first wedding cake so I'm worried about all the "what if's" once the cake is out of my sight!! I'm sure you can all relate! icon_smile.gif

Thanks again, you guys are great!!
