I am making a ship cake for a local fair. I believe (although I cannot get an answer from superintendent or the rule book) that all deocorations need to be edible. So I am thinking of the masts. I am wondering if I can make them out of a mixture of fondant and gumpaste a few days earlier so they get nice and hard. Does anyone this this is possible. Also, the bad thing is that the area which the cakes are displayed is NOT air conditioned, wil the mast hold up after 6 days in the heat and humidity. I appreciate any thoughts/experiences. Thanks a bunch.

I would probably do them in just gumpaste...it will dry hard as a rock, and should hold up fine in the heat. Fondant/gumpaste mix doesn't dry quite as hard and would take longer to dry.

Goodluck!!

Yes, definetly gumpaste only! I would roll it through a pasta machine to make it thin and use royal icing for your glue on it that way you wont have to worry about a meltdown.

Thank you so much for all the great tips!!! You are all terrific. I'll give straight gumpaste a try! Thanks again!
