Hello fellow cc'ers !!

I've begun working on my website and realized that NOW is probably a good time to get a logo. This is what I've come up with on my own (wish I could hire someone, though). Although I'm NO graphic designer ... I do know how to use Photoshop, so I thought I'd give it a shot.

I would greatly appreciate your honest input and suggestions. I'm not the type who gets easily offended, so please feel free to tell me the truth. I think it's a good start, but probably a little too busy. So, I'm hoping with all of you looking at it - you might have some good ideas for improving it.

Also, if any of you CC'ers are graphic designers ... would you possibly be interested in helping me out with the pastry bag? I do not know how to create vector drawings - but I think that would make a huge improvement. (That's just an image that I drew and scanned in.)

Well, here it goes ...

I like the first one better, it's easier to read the words.

We have a graphic designer here on CC, her member name is oneprimalscream -- and she has done some fabulous work for people. You might PM her and ask her to pop into this thread icon_smile.gif

I'm not a graphic designer either, but I really like it. I think the pastry bag is a very nicely done, unique graphic. For me, having the 2 difference typefaces and two different colors for the company name makes it look a little busy since every word is different. I would either do the italics for "scrumptious" or use 2 different colors, but not both.

I like the design of the second one beter, but you might want to consider instances where your logo would be black and white only and how that would look. You could always use a variation if that comes up, but just something to consider.

Just my 2 cents. It really is very nice.

I really like the first one a lot. I don't like the second as much for 2 reasons: 1- the first one just looks "cleaner" to me, and 2- from personal experience I have learned that putting a picture, even as light as that one, makes it harder for a lot of people to read. You wouldn't think it would, but it often does.

By the way, I love the pastry bag. It almost looks like you used it to write your name.

Good luck,
Kathi

I think I like the second one although the writing below the image is difficult to read. Nice work.

I don't want to sound discouraging, but I think it needs more.
Remember your logo constitutes as advertisment for you business.

You have very strong words "Truely SCRUMPTIOUS". You need some visual to go with that.

Show me some of those scruptious cookies.

(envisioning those cookies is making me hungry)

I love the first one, just easier to read than the second, but both are great. Like someone already suggested, I would keep the same color for the name. I like the different font, but it's too busy with different fonts and different colors.

The second one would be good for a sticker to use on the boxes. Everything is compact and could fit on a small space. If you do that, though, I wouldn't add the comment under the pastry bag, it would just be too small.

Great job, though, I think overall looks fantastic!

The piping bag really doesn't fit with the style of fonts used for the logo. Also, not sure of how far you're trying to take your business in the future...I think it standard practice in the "graphic design" industry as far as logos are concerned to not use fonts exactly as they are as you have here. There are several reasons for this...I don't have the time right now to go into all of the details. Another thing is when I see your logo I immediately related it to another company's brand or trademark. It looks very similar. That is not a good thing. Try to make it more unique as a whole so that you won't be inadvertently infringing on someone else's brand.

sugarlove - I'm trying to rework it right now! I sure would like it to be more clean, simple and elegant like yours. Didn't have any other company in mind when I did this ... not even sure if I was going to stick with these colors, but I needed something to start with. I'm curious, can you pm me and tell me who you think it looks like? And thank you for the feedback.

I would love a little .jpg file of an icing bag like that if anyone wouldn't mind sending it to me. I haven't been able to find one to use. I already have a logo (it's okay), but I would like to use the icing bag just as a little "decoration" on my website.

When designing the logos can you use the clip art found in graphic packages or is that a problem. And will you have to have your design copy written? Can you copy write it if you use clip art?

After I register a name I would like to design a logo but I just did not understand the boundaries.

Most companies that are going after trademarking their name/logo try to avoid cliparts being in the logo for the very reason of it not being an original design which would run the risk of another company already using that mark as a result your trademark application being denied and you losing $399 for each classification that you were trying to trademark. That's a lot of money to risk losing. Also, the logo can be easily reproduce with clipart logos. If you would like to trademark in the future I would suggest finding a designer that will create a logo that is original and not use clipart. There are some very talent designers out there that can draw from nothing and make a clipart look just like it is a clipart. Besides, I can easily tell a logo that was made using clipart images and one that was not.

Tscookies-- I really like both of these. They don't remind me of anyone elses logos. My favorite out of the two is the 1st one because it looks like you just piped the logo.

Don't get discouraged, Go with your heart. It shouldn't lead you astray.

I can't understand why anyone would WANT to use clipart in their logo. Your logo is how people identify you. If you have a generic-looking (I hope that this doesn't offend anyone...) clipart image in your logo, then all of your business collateral will most likely match it (business cards, fliers, signs, etc), and that's how people will judge you. They will see YOU and your business as 'generic'. If you create beautiful cookies, then you'll want a logo that will tell that to the public - NOT a pixelated, generic clipart image that dozens of other people have used.

Besides, you can't use clipart for anything, really...

How are you going to resize it for the sign for your storefront? You can't...

It's best to just get someone with experience to do it for you, that way it is original and professional looking.

However, I would NOT recommend going somewhere like Craigslist or eBay and getting the $20 logo design deal. Everyone that I've spoke with that has dealt with one of those has never been happy with it. Go to a local agency in your town, or look at some of the designer's previous work before throwing down the money.

I have a generic logo. *sigh* Maybe in a few years I'll have someone make it more "me," but for now it will work. My sister owns an advertising promotions business and has an artist that she deals with all the time for stuff like this. That's right, could have probably gotten a good deal, but did I bother to ask? Noooooo. LOL! Live and learn.

i think going with a professional designer is a great idea too. although, you came up pretty cute ideas yourself. icon_wink.gif my question is, how can you find out if the logo/business name you came up with isn't already taken? when you came up with yours, did you first have to go to a certain website to see if someone else already had it?

If you are running any kind of business, you need to have a Business Tax License...and if you go to someone to design a logo, they are NOT going to use someone else's logo because if they are truly an artist, then there would be no sense in stealing another person's logo.

At the old agency I used to do graphic design for, this dude came in and wanted me to use a Chevron Techron car in his logo...just a small .jpeg image of it. And he was willing to pay $600 for it. I created a 100% original illustration of a car, but nooooo, he had his heart set on the Techron car. *sigh*

Tscookies,
I really like the first design, like someone else said, looks like the piping bag is writing. I also think the colors compliment each other - yet 'Truely Scrumptious' really stands out since it's darker. I think the second one looks too busy and hard to read.

If you're trying to get this one more simple and clean, I'd consider a sans serif font for the text, or at least a serif font that isn't as "busy" - the fancy serifs on the T, L and S are kind of redundant with the flourishes in Scrumptious and they compete.

I like the message you are sending with the pastry bag but I didn't really "get" it until I read your tag line (which should also definitely be a sans serif font...easier to read)...this is a tough challenge because the extra words are what makes your design less simple. Can shorten that text, make it more concise? Presuming you are going to stick with doing this yourself, I prefer the first version with the pastry bag small and solid, definitely not faded nor obscured by words. I agree that you could use version 2 for other purposes (stickers, etc.)

I would never, ever use clip art for a logo for the reasons oneprimalscream stated.

Frankly I think you've done a really great job with this, I like that the icing bag is your own design, now it's just a matter of making it pop a little more. Unless of course you get some more info regarding whose brand it resembles...that could definitely be a problem!
