im having a really hard time wanting to make cakes lately, and theres only ONE reason i can think thats holding me back..

non apriciation..

i havent started selling cakes yet, just making them for practice and fun.. but im SOOOO tired of people just blowing them off as cake.. like its nothing.. that it probably took 2 seconds of my time to do...

ive asked people (friends/family) what they would pay for a 10 inch wide 4 inches tall cake, and people respond with " maybe 10 dollars" ... or the one that got me REALLY mad was " i only apriciate free cake"....

i am so discouraged.. i feel that i picked the totally wrong hobbie, cuz no one cares for the outcome.. i dont eat cake myself, otherwise i would just make em for me.. so i could be proud of them.. but i simply dont want to make a cake for no one to care about..

ive wanted for SOOOO long to start making cakes for people, and charging for them, but how in the world can i do this when people are so GOSH DARN CHEAP?!?!?..

sorry for the rant... but does anyone else feel this way? i guess i just dont want to feel alone lol.. like im the only one who has people not caring about what i love to do..

thanks for reading icon_smile.gif

I am soooooooo sorry you feel that way---I think we all get discouraged and feel underappreciated at times-but you keep on doing cakes-but don't give them to the people that make you feel badly about it. Donate them to school carnivals, make them for family gettogethers, things like that-those things will help get your name out and give you practice time and you will feel good about it. There are always people that want something for nothing and try to make a person feel cruddy if they don't give things to them-but keep your chin up-it will work out. Don't give them the power to make you quit doing something you truly enjoy doing.

I sympathize, but try to do it to please yourself. Look at it as OJT and when someone sees your best work, they will be willing to pay more.

Don't forget that you asked them for a price quote....if you set a price they will pay it if they really want it.

Step 1: don't give cake to those who don't appreciate them. Ever. This includes the cheap people who might spend $10.

Step 2: find an appreciative audience!!! Ideas:

nursing staff at hospitals
domestice abuse shelters which also house children
teachers
your bank employees

I bring cakes to my high school students. Not only do they enjoy them, they are brutally honest if they think "it sucks."

I don't sell cakes; it's my hobby, so I appreciate people who want/enjoy/appreciate them.

Don't let the losers bring you down.

one good way to feel better is to STOP asking those people what would they pay! Look for similar cakes and cake shops in your area and compare your work with them.

i know what you mean, you put so much work into something and you feel good about it and then someone says "oh its ok". That really stinks. i dont ask anyone what they think, only DH but it feels good when someone acknowledges what you've done.

I know people here on CC knows what it takes to make a cake so i post my pics here and get my encouragement from what people say about it here on CC.

Hang in there, most family & friends are just jealous and just refuses to give compliments. I have a bunch of people like this in my life and i know it so i dont care what they say usually.

Don't get discouraged. It takes time to build a business. I like the comment with the high school students. My son is a senior and I make cakes fot his friends all the time. They are very honest!!!. Hoping that next year I will be able to make there graduation cakes. Word to mouth is the best publicity you can get but it takes time. Never give your work away!!!!!!!!!!!!! thumbs_up.gifthumbs_up.gifthumbs_up.gif

Instead of asking for validation from these non-appreciative people......TELL THEM how wonderful your creations are!!

I never ask my hubby what he thinks of my hard work. I always tell him LOOK WHAT I MADE!!!!! I'm excited about it and, in turn he's excited.

Remember what it was like when you were a kid and finished your first finger paint picture? You didn't calmly walk to the other room and ask your mom "what do you think of this picture I painted?". You ran to the room and shouted "look what I did mom!!".

Be the same with your creations now! If you think there worth $40 chances are others will think it too!

Some people don't appreciate the work that goes into stuff. Talk to people who know what you put into a cake about your work. I've educated my husband about it and he knows how much time goes into stuff so he is appreciative.
Point out to the cheap people you know that a 10" cake costs more than $10 at the grocery store.

thank u guys for your responces...

they made me realize that people just obvisouly dont know.. they dont care to know either. From now on, if they dont comment on how beautiful it is before they say they want some, they DONT get any icon_biggrin.gif

im just gonna start making them, and giving them to functions of some sort.. ill have to check into that and see whats allowed. i could always just get my boyfriends mom to take them to work.. they usually like cake, and that could bring future orders possibly...

so thank u guys VERY much once again for putting a smile on my face with friendly words..

Sounds like you'll be pretty busy! I look forward to seeing more of your stuff. 60 cookie cutters?! icon_surprised.gif ?! But you're right, even if you don't use them all right now, they last forever, and there will be lots more Halloween's you can use them for. Besides, it's impossible to have too many cookie cutters!
