I keep seeing all these birthday cakes in the galleries with big numbers standing up on top. What are they made of and how do I do it? I just love the look of them and would like to do it for my sons 2nd birthday cake. Please help it is coming up soon!

You can make them out of Gumpaste several days ahead of time and let them dry. When you make them, insert some wooden skewers that will stick into the cake (this is what holds the number in place).

I just made a number 1 out of cardboard and then put fondant over it. I don't like it. It's not smooth and perfect looking. Someone told me to use gumpaste. So that's what I would do next time.

Depending on how much time I have I either make them out of MMF (marshmallow fondant) or Gumpaste. MMF takes longer to dry so keep that in mind. I usually attach toothpicks or popsicles sticks to the back with a little royal icing and then cover those up with a little left over MMF or gumpaste.

Depending on the cake, I sometimes make mine from chocolate too!! Trace on wax paper over a pattern, let dry then "glue" lollypop sticks to the back with more chocolate to stick into the cake
