Okay, I will get this figured out one of these days. I posted it earlier in some obscure place, so am trying again. If you read it twice, please ignore one of the postings! ![]()
Help! I am making a fire truck cake for one of our fire stations on Monday and need black for outlining. I have used the Wilton black in the tube in the past, but wondered if I could get some advice on black icing that would actually taste good. I will be doing the truck itself with cream cheese icing. I would also like to find some way to simulate the chrome ..... any ideas?
Thank you SO much in advance.
Martha
Okay, so this may be a stupid question, but do you know if Wilton makes black color? Wilton is the only brand that I have accessible without going online and I don't have time to order anything.
Thanks!
Wilton does make a black coloring. If you are going to use it though Make sure you either start with chocolate icing (or if you have people that can't have chocolate or caffiene-I do in my family) then use a brown coloring first to tint your icing. Get it a as dark as you can before adding black. Then you will get a black color instead of a gray.
This same theory also works with red. Use a pink to tint your icing first, then add your red coloring.
For these darker colors it is easier to start with an already colored icing or you are just trying to color white and can cause you a lot of headaches.
If you get a chance (now or later) I would HIGHLY suggest ordering some Americolor gels off of CakeCentral. They are more concentrated than Wilton and take less to color icing.
HTH, any other questions just ask!

They are all right about starting with a chocoalte buttercream and then adding the black - works every times and tastes great! About the chrome -I would recommend doing the chrome accents either in royal icing or fondant, and then going over it with luster dust mixed with vodka or lemon extract. Hopefully you have a store near you that carries it since you don't have time to order it. The leather jacket cake in my photos has chrome accents that I did with Nu Silver, so you can see what the effect looks like. If you don't have time to do the luster dust, just tint your icing gray (with a little bit of black) and try it that way.
Good luck!
Thanks, Pyxxydust. That is a greatidea. I know that I can't get lustre dust (Hobby Lobby is as good as it gets here), but I know that I can get the Wilton metallic dust and just use the silver. Actually, I might have silver at home from an opened package. I know that I used gold on a bow one time.
Thanks so much for the idea. I know what I will spend my Saturday doing!

If I have to go with the Wilton dust, I may just use buttercream and sprinkle it on .... or they just might not have chrome! I do have fondant at home though, so I will keep that option in mind. I haven't ever used fondant as "accessory" items, but am always open to trying something new.
Thanks again. ~mt
