How do you know when you need to use dowels?
I am doing a 9" layer cake with a 1/2 sports ball cake on top (well, upside down, for a ladybug body). I am wondering if I can put the 1/2 cake on top of the 9" cakes, or if I will have to put it on a cake board and then dowel the 9" cake.
Any help is appreciated!

I always use a cake board and dowls when stacking no matter what. This way I know that I won't have a problem. I think you should, but it is up to you.

I did one before.. I just added the cakeboard underneath the half ball pan.. And make sure you also add some wax paper between your cake board and bottom cake.. That way when you lift it, your icing wont be stuck to cake board.. Good luck!
